Spring has rounded the corner!

last modified: 6 years ago

Spring has sprung, but before it did Omar paid a visit to help brighten things up. He brought the two plants in the foreground ...

... a Bidens blazing embers and a real genuine Agave 'blue glow' who had 5 pups attached which have been potted up separately.

Also in his box of plant treasures was a white flowering potato vine, which he assured me, I couldn't live without. So I'm excited about having my already long life life thus extended by the gift of a marvelous vine ... ;-) .

As he sat pondering the view from the patio he suggested that the rusty, cutesy chickens and wagon wheel decor did not 'go' with David and the three muses concrete planter ...

And of course he was absolutely right! I like the urn with asparagus fern and the Roman soldier's profile there much better. What do you think?

In the foreground red pot is a Mangave 'kaleidoscope' passed along by Matt at the fall swap. Omar has been promised the first offspring.

Yesterday, and seemingly overnight, everything turned green as the dyckias and agaves sent up their bright and long lasting tall bloom spikes to join the four nerve daisies that had been flowering all winter ...

I am quite fond of Yucca 'brake lights' shown in the post above and here ...

Correction: I had originally called it an "Agave", but it's commonly known as Yucca 'brake 'lights'. Omar just informed me that it's an Hesperaloe parviflora. Thank you Omar, but dang I hate it when you're right. Just kidding folks ... LOL

The flowers last well into summer. Here's a close-up ...

Below is a close view of the intricate flowers on the 8 ft bloom spike of a Texas native manfreda ...

Just after wondering why I was keeping a nondescript little cactus in a pot for many years it showed me why by bursting into flower! It 's been doing this for almost a week. The flowers last several days while fresh flowers open almost daily. Where a tiny cactus stores the energy to do this I'll never know!

Are four pictures still the limit per post? Just in case ...

I'm trying Agave 'quadricolor' in the strawberry pot. They take the full sun and are perfectly hardy.

    ~ ~ ~

They offset regularly. Here's the pot from which they were removed. A several year old clump of Black foot daisy is shown as well ...

Just for fun: a rare spotted serpent is perpetually eyeing the bunny below. Omar sorry, but I just can't resist a little cutesy ...

With Bob's expert muscle power (be careful with that hatchet honey!) some redesigning has been going on in the front yard. That will be the subject of another post when it all (hopefully) comes together.

Please join in and show us what happening in your yard. You're welcome to post pictures below, or just to tell us.

    Happy gardening!

Mrs. BR Cant is showing off.

The next is Climbing Clotilde Soupert. She didn't even flinch when I dug her up to put her in my tall tower obelisk my dh built.
The dark red rose is a mystery to me. She showed up in the pot with Mrs. BR Cant when I bought her. I dont know if she was a rogue cutting that was accidentally stuck with her or perhaps a volunteer seedling, but her scent makes your eyes roll back into your head. I tried taking cuttings for years. Finally I succeeded, but shortly after the original one in with BR Cant died.

This is just about the weirdest praying mantis I've ever seen in my yard, and the next is a horrid bug that wouldn't turn loose of my cl. Souvenir de la Malmaison. I'll have to post another houzz won't let me do more

My huge pots have been swallowed up by petunias, I believe these are the pink and purple wave varieties. my husband created my little orb obelisks. There are other plants in there but they failed to keep up.
The second photo is just a PW hanging basket I found at HEB. I believe it's the Cleopatra recipe.
Then, my baby's first bloom. it's from a seedling I grew from Thomas Affleck seedpods. This one seems to be growing with a climbing habit its laying over and 2 basel shoots have grown already with tiny buds on each. I have named it after my mom, Elaine. My mom is fighting stomach cancer right now after having 97% of her stomach removed.
The next is my second seedling to bloom. Much softer in color and only 15 petals.
I would highly recommend Duke of Edinburgh its quite a stout little rose. I think it will be larger next year. Oh and smells devine.
And it is an Eden! Last year I was told by many that this was not an Eden. She has changed a lot in a year, now shows her true Eden form. I couldn't be more thrilled!

Ok. Here you have some of my spring ” happenings”

Some beauties are still in the awakening process like this tricolor sweet potato vine.

My front yard flowerbed is looking good with Blackfoot daisies, Erigeron, tickseeds, a few bluebonnets and some broccoli

I’m getting to the point that even my windowsills are packed with plants (No bueno)

Some thugs, like this variegated Artemisia, justify why they have a spot in my garden.

    I’ll continue on another post

Tweedia caerulea. After 2 years of mediocre performance it decided to put a decent display.

    Yellow Columbine, so reliable!

Abutilon striatum (I think). It loves spring, fall and mild winters but it hates summer.

Abutilon “Marilyn’s Choice”. Looking pretty next to Penstemons.

Accidental but pretty combo: Coral honeysuckle and P. caerulea.

Last one. A bunch (5) of tropical hibiscuses in one pot.

Lesli, I love seeing all your plants, how and where you've planted them, and the great iron work your hubby does!

Yes. Mrs. B. R. Can't is the biggest show off ever! And she has lots of show off.

In all my years of growing roses I never had one self seed, nor did I ever plant rose seeds like you have. Wow -- they are gorgeous. Keep us posted.

Omar! You cut the grass! Is somebody coming over? ;-) .... That's what Bob asks me when I clean house. Hahaha

Seriously, love seeing the enormous variety of plants you get to thrive in your yard. You must be doing something right! :D

Honestly, I love them all. Plus, you always come up with some that I never heard of before!

How are the vines on the pergola doing?

Your yard looks beautiful as usual. Mine looks like weed central. Just hasn't been dry enough to do much work.

Thanks, Ragna. Well, I grow thugs. They grow everywhere.

The vines on the pergolas are doing fine. The regular potato vine jas not stopped growing and blooming since I planted it last year. Unbelievable. Besides that, I recently planted 2 variegated potato vines (the Clematis drumondii refused to grow there). The Thunbergia grandiflora came back strong but I don’t think it will bloom any time soon. The Mustang grape is also growing like crazy but the Chehz vine (I forgot it’s technical nsme) is still deciding if it’s gonna grow or not. The pink Coral vine has not come back yet. Here‘s a picture of the regular potato vine.

Tangerine Beauty’s best year so far after being moved and pruned; salvia black and blue awakening in the background and lots of early clematis

Well, summer came galloping in rather early for my taste and spring has become a distant memory. How are all of y'alls gardens taking all the heat and humidity? How are YOU taking it????
