Kitchen Design Dilemma

Hello! I just purchased my first home and I am having trouble deciding on what to do with the kitchen. The previous owners installed white subway tiles, granite counter tops, and dark flooring throughout the condo. The colors of the current cabinets and the dark floors just look odd to me. I definitely need to replace the fridge and vent above the stove, but was wondering if anyone had ideas for the cabinets. Would white cabinets be the best option? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

Definitely think white cabinets would really showcase the floor and the granite.

Live with it the way it is for 6 months to a year. You may want to change other things than just the color like the layout.

Live with it a while. add color with linens and kitchen ware. This popularity of all white and hating on wood could be be a dated trend. White is a classic neutral but properly painting wood is a big chore. Paintng walls is easier.

I would paint the cabinets if you are committed to keeping the wood floors. They just don't go together and painting the cabinets while irreversible is cheaper/easier than changing floors. if you might change the floors in the nearish future and love the cabinets live with everything for awhile

It looks like they started renovating but stopped at the cabinets. Definitely think of painting them an ivory to complement the countertop. The floors are lovely.

    Jennifer, what did you decide?

First thing I'd do is scrape the popcorn and get rid of that bulky ceiling fan! Who puts a ceiling fan in kitchen and no lights? The lighting on the upper part of the cabinets is no help.

Call in an electrician and get some decent, recessed lighting in there. At the very least, lose the fan and get a flush mount ceiling light w/3-4 bulbs. At least this way you'll be able to see in there.

Doe the vent hood over the stove actually vent somewhere? like outside? If you have no ducting, you have no venting.

You can always paint those cabinets white. If they're a good quality, solid wood, painting is doable. If they're a cheap mdf or fiberboard make-up, then just get new cabinets. If you're going that route, then I'd think about doing a diff layout and using that bar area for actual working space. Seems like a waste of kitchen to have that sitting area. You possible move the sink over there.

thank you all for the comments I 100% agree!! Starting June 1st the cabinets are being refinished and painted to BM Simply White! The hardware is being changed to oil rubbed bronze and I contacted my painter just yesterday to see when he would be available to remove the popcorn ceiling. I also 100% agree I hate that ceiling fan so I'm going to have an electrician come in and remove it and replace it with recessed lighting. I also got a new range hood in stainless steel to match the stove!! Just have to decide on paint for the walls. All so exciting I will post pictures when the project is completed! thank you for all your help and suggestions!

Just weighing in. Would love to see any updates.

    1. I agree with all comments re paint if you are keeping the floor. Are you keeping the floor? I would if it is hardwood, but if not, maybe see what is out there for new flooring.
    2. White cabinet paint will be find but try to get a white close to the subway tile color. This way it looks like the wall and counter are beige on purpose.
    3. @Beth: you bring up an interesting point about the stove vent. The ceiling fan is there to help ventilate, and probably along with opening a window. I have a vent like this, and a second floor above my kitchen. What would you recommend for me? or for Jennifer?

On a positive note, Jennifer you have been blessed with neutral walls and surfaces plus decent wood cabinets. This kitchen will last you many years to come. Keep us posted!

In this makeover, we kept the base cabinets and painted them navy blue. Keeping the base cabinets will definitely help the cost of removing and reinstalling the granite you have. Then just replace the upper cabinets with all new....and take them up to the ceiling with crown molding!
