I'd leave it alone and let the price reflect the need for updating. Fix anything that needs fixing, clear everything out, and spic-n-span clean it.

If the kitchen is in good condition, consider it a time capsule and play it up. Clean like crazy and throw in a couple of vintage decorative touches. Cleaning, fixing small irritations like dripping faucets and sagging doors, and a fresh coat of paint are worthy investments of your time and effort. Anything past that is usually not a good return on investment, especially if you put a dollar value on your time.

S R, you might be surprised at the number of people that are looking for a true MCM gem. One that hasn't been updated in the last 70 years. I read something recently where a previously undiscovered MCM house was found in Palm Springs and it was a treasure. Let me look for the article for you. If I can find it, I will post here....the issue is finding it again!

Consider also that your taste could be different than a potential buyer's. Depending on the area the house could also be considered a teardown. As Denita mentioned there are people looking for MCM's the more close to original as possible.

I definitely wouldn't invest money in a kitchen reno at this time. We have no idea where the market is going in the shorter term. Clean, fix anything broken, and hope for the best.

People are nutso over “time capsule” houses. MCM is THE hot home style in demand for that. There are dozens of groups with hundreds of thousands of members who obsess over metal cabinets, original metal edged laminate, pink bathrooms, and all of that. The stairs would probably be a deal-breaker for me. Anyone with kids would probably walk away or negotiate the cost of changing the stairs. Otherwise, I love the house.

The kitchen is tiny but all the windows steal the show.
