Kitchen Redesign Help Needed

Hi All!

Ok, I’m calling on all kitchen redesign visionaries to help me with figuring out my kitchen redesign! I am not one that is gifted with being able to see potential in redoing a space and need your assistance. I have a very small kitchen that currently has an upright column which I am going to knock out in order to push my kitchen out slightly and create a bit more space. Hoping you can help with figuring out a floor plan for my kitchen that utilizes IKEA cabinets with a mix of cabinets and open shelving to utilize the space without feeling too claustrophobic.

All my kitchen appliances are new and therefore will not be able to be changed. But I can change the vent hood as well as location of plumbing and gas line, if necessary.

Attached is the kitche drawings and below is a link to a video of the current kitchen. In the video you’ll notice a column at the end of the counter with an eight sign on the wall and spice rack. This is the column that will be removed and only a beam will be left along the ceiling.

Is your range really only 20" wide? Typo, maybe? 30"?

Is that 33" to the right of the beam available for use for the Kitchen?

I assume 8' ceilings on both sides of the beam.

How do you feel about having the Kitchen "split" by the beam? Since it hangs down approximately 5" from the ceiling, it will be noticeable.

What's to the right of the Kitchen? Below?

Do you have a Dining Room? (I assume so since you're Kitchen is rather small.)

BTW...you have to download the video to watch it and I don't download most things. It's really better anyway to post still shots of the various views of the Kitchen.

Do you also have a sketch of the entire floor the Kitchen is on? It helps us see how the Kitchen relates to the rest of the home and how traffic flows, in, around, and through the Kitchen.

I get twitchy when people say things like "I'm going to knock out a vertical column" with being clear that they have consulted with an architect or structural engineer, and are 100% certain that it won't cause their ceiling to collapse.

To Cawaps' point, I'm assuming the beam is replacing a load-bearing post and that's why you have the beam going through the entire depth of the Kitchen (top-to-bottom on your layout.)

Knocking out a support post means complete re-engineering the load that it carried, with a longer, taller, beam that has to have posts at both ends. Those can occasionally be fit into the wall. But it’s not a cheap or easy thing. It needs professionals. There goes 5-15K of your kitchen fund. Is that a must in your budget allocation? What about the other costs associated with that? You’re replacing the flooring for all of that?

If that’s still a go, it still will mean that your measurements won’t be rntirekynaccurate until the size of the beam and end posts are calculated. The beam will be a LVL, and probably at least 14” H. Maybe more. It depends on the load. If the end posts for that can’t be fit into the wall, you’ll have 6” stub walls to house them. Those things greatly impact the possibilities. It’s very difficult to plan anything with big unknowns.
