Container plantings seldom require any mulching....and it really doesn't do much good anyway. Very little soil moisture is lost due to surface evaporation - it is actually the exposed surface/sides of the container and the elevated drainage that accounts for rapid drying....also the media. And most often the container is sized to the mature growth of the plant so very little of the actual soil mix surface is exposed.

Just an FYI but most of the online sources that discuss mulching containers are those providing very dubious container gardening recommendations as well. Most don't seem to realize that container gardening is a vastly different process from inground gardening and you cannot superimpose the methodology of one to the other.

Yes i ve realized that the online sources complicate things too much. I couldnt even find a simple way of mixing a DIY potting soil. Finally decided using 3 basic materials instead of NASA combinations. So i m just gonna leave the mulching out and keep them well watered. I may just need to add some stones only if my cat starts getting interested in digging the soil :) Thank you.

If you want to mulch, some kind of bark might be best. It will gradually decompose (which is a good thing) and if you use big pieces or nuggets most will likely stay in place. However, your best bet for continued moisture is to find a way to wick moisture up into the pot from the bottom. Either that or water one or two times a day when it is warm.

Yeah during the summer; i think i have to water at least once depending on the plant. (It is kind of an Aegean weather here but i presume asparagus needs less water than tomatoes) And as you said, there are trays under the pots so the excess water will keep the soil damp i hope. Thanks!

Plants in pots take a lot more water than in-ground. In the summer it is at least once every day.... maybe two days... that I need to water.

Asparagus in pots!? Please let us know how well that works. I may have to give it a try.

I ve read at many pages that it is possible. But you should wait for 2-3 years before cutting the spears (to eat). It needs to mature.
