You have sort of a fun midcentury vibe, with the blue, orange, and yellow zones. Then the two armchairs by the window just... look like grandparents stuck into the whole thing. The colors are fine, but the patterns are more country and traditional than the rest of what's going on.

That's what jumped out to me. But when you say "refresh," what is it that feels tired to you? I mean you could do anything from new floors to quieter paints, to bolder storage pieces...

acm, here's a photo of the two chairs' fabric. I never would have thought of it as traditional but maybe with the close up you'll have more info. Not really sure what I mean by freshen up. New paint? New lamps? New art? New area rug? I suppose I'm kinda open.

Sorry, I'm not sure how to make my photos a bit smaller!

jjam, Yes, there is hardwood under the wall to wall carpet. That is definitely on the list to have them redone, hopefully, in the not too distant future. You really think white walls? Wouldn't that be kinda harsh with the furniture?

Ah the fabric makes more sense when seen up close. As it was, the first couple of photos of your room gave me an entirely different sense of the space than the later ones did.

Agree that freeing the wood floors and then getting a larger area rug that pulls in all your colors would be a good move here -- ideally the rug should be large enough for the whole seating arrangement to get front feet onto (including the whiter chairs).

    Other thoughts:

    1) the lamp behind the orange couch is wrong. you either need an end table between the two large seating pieces, with a table lamp on it, or you need the floor lamp to be a long arching one that enters into the seating space and could provide reading light there. (also better in terms of style)

    2) the wardrobe looks super crowded in its corner -- any chance it could have a home in a bedroom? would give the room more breathing space, and the mirror must make the person sitting there a bit self-conscious. (if you need the storage on this floor, then so be it.)

    3) the little table under the pass-through doesn't really seem to serve a purpose. Is the door behind the chair the front door? if so, maybe you'd be better served with some kind of "entry table" that would have a bowl for keys or mail, or a drawer for mittens, etc., rather than this kind of knick-knack zone. as long as it has open legs, it won't block the register -- could even put some kind of low light there on a timer to welcome you home in the evenings.

acm, what you're seeing as a "pass though" is actually an alcove with a mirror backing. It is indeed close to the front door and the table that is there currently under it serves as an entry as you mentioned.

The lamp behind the orange couch is a table lamp on a table. I'll take try your suggestion to move it where the two couches butt up to one another.

Alas, I'm stuck with the armoire! Any other ideas for different table lamps? Wall color?

Refinish floors, paint walls white, remove armoire, marble topped table and cornered bow-front cabinet. That will give you a true freshen up and you can start leaning more into your MCM vibe.

White walls. you have the mcm vibe going on there but it's mixed in with too much 1950 grandma!

get a nice piece of mcm furniture to replace the antique armoire.

(or, if you don't want mcm, then what other style do you like)?

For sure I'd remove that little rug under the table. it's far too small and just doesn't work.

if you can refinish those wood floors, and then do a 5x8 area rug, it would look better.

paint the walls white and play up those chairs and art.

this is mine with Simply White on the walls. (I'm looking for a new rug). I refinished the 1960's walnut console . the chair is from Article, as is the sofa/bench. (I'm looking for a taller lamp too)

Do the walls seem too stark?

are you up for a new sofa to work w/your chairs? try Article. I love the colors . they have a blue velvet one.

This teal would look so good w/your chairs. do the love seat in the leather shown off to the left.

both of these are on the eclectic side

all these walls are white. do any of them seam stark? you have to play w/colors/pattern/textures.

Start w/your chairs and build from those

Count me in for white walls as well. Until you're ready to pull up the carpet, I would eliminate the area rug altogether. You have an interesting mix of contemporary with antiques. Is there any furniture that can be relocated? Perhaps the corner curio? Unless I'm wrong, your sofa and loveseat are Flexsteel Digby, aren't they? I have the same sofa in my house. It's 12 years old and I love it. I had a slipcover made for mine since my kids and pets wrecked the upholstery but the sofa has held up amazingly well.

Beth H, the couch is a navy Kashmira fabric and the rug is a 5 x 8. You're right in that all your photos the white sure doesn't seem too harsh. It is very light and bright.

katinparadise, yes the sofa and loveseat are the Flexsteel Digby. The two chairs are also Flexsteel.

Guess I'm a bit ignorant as to eclectic means. I thought it was a equal blend of more modern along with more antique. But apparently I'm incorrect and it's reading "grandma". The house is a 1948 ranch, if that makes a difference to you all. I love the suggestions, Keep 'em coming!

You aren't ignorant by any means. I think you have a great grasp of eclecticism and seem to understand that it lends itself perfectly to individual, unique expression. Your "grandma" elements add a touch of nostalgic charm and sweetness to your space. MCM doesn't have to be Mad Men "cool"; in fact, I am pretty sure that "granny chic" is a thing these days. White walls, for sure, but keep on keeping on in the direction you're going. You're creating a wonderfully evocative home.

I don't mind the armoire so much, but the corner cabinet reads a little country/granny to me.

IdaClaire, thank you so much for your kind words. It's been a bit intimidating hearing all the comments. I thought my room just needed a bit of freshening up but now I'm reconsidering...

always1stepbehind, maybe I could have it redone in the ubiquitous white to freshen it up.

kcastle129, I think you are seeing a trend, and when so many people see white walls in your future, there's got to be something to it!! If I could do just one thing I'd paint the walls white. Not a stark white but something that will serve as a neutral background. Then please, please, refinish the floor. You'll be so happy you did. I love your mix of pieces and would guess that there are stories behind many of them! You just need a quieter background to let them be what they are. It's a wonderful place.

castle, didn't mean for the granny thing to be a bad thing! you have a nice blend of elements and they all work together. you're the one that said you wanted to freshen up. freshen to me means, "newer and brighter". That's why I mentioned the things I did. If all you want is a new paint color and new rug, then you can certainly just do that. can you grab some paint samples? it doesn't have to be white. As for the rug, it's pretty much unanimous that what you have isn't working. But if you like it, then keep it! it's your room. maybe some wall paint, a throw, some pillows, is enough fresh-up for you?

    Not a Pro.

I love your furniture pieces and I agree, painting the walls a nice white, adding a plant or two and a few tweaks, will bring out your lovely room.

Yes, white is certainly the trend in the comments. However, I just can't bring myself to do white. I was thinking a very pale aqua to go with the background of the chairs. Something like BM In Your Eyes. What do you think? If someone is bored enough (aren't we all right now?) some ideas for a new rug would be appreciated!

"Why be a Copy when you were born an original?"

That Statement reminds me of this living room. If this room was a person standing

in a group, I'd notice them first. Which is something you don't see that too often nowadays.

I love how bright and inviting the colors are. The colors remind me of a fall day, it makes me want me to grab some Herbal tea and curl up on the couch.

Personally, I wouldn't do white walls. Why? They are literally everywhere and I find it boring! Grey and white seems to be a trend, you know what else was a trend ? Eating Tide Pods.

I don't necessarily think trends are all that.

Maybe repainting the yellow will give you what you're looking for? All I know is if this is

"Granny." look then my Grandma never got the memo. I'm 25 and I absolutely love it!

By the way...love the Armoire! Narnia awaits! I also love yellow; lets be "Granny, friends!"

Here's In Your Eyes on the wall behind the tv

I'm afraid it might look too icy white.

would look similar to this one on the wall, maybe a bit lighter.

how about a blue with a bit of gray to it to play off you chairs? Maybe Smoke?

This is what Smoke looks like: (the white is Genesis White)

How about this ceiling? It's Kendall Charcoal. Now this would be a really cool update in your room

Then bring in the golds/oranges for accents.

The rug is an overdyed wool rug in a goldenrod shade. works well w/your camel leather, the blues and the gold in your chairs.

Paint the trim and doors a nice crisp white.

bring in some orange pots w/greenery.

I gave you a gold/marble table (you have a lot of heavy wood in the room, trying to lighten it up between the chairs) with a soft blue/white table lamp. (lamps plus 100+ colors)

another option is to paint the walls white, and all of the trim, the crown and the doors in one of the soft blue grays. That would look rather stylish.

and these blue grays not only compliment the golds/camel tones, but also the wood furniture.

Beth H, now you're talking my language! I like these ideas. I like Smoke but I wonder if it might read more gray than blue. I also like the lamp and the side table.

My idea with the current rug was to pull the blue of the couch, the rust of the loveseat and the yellow/gold of the chairs all together. But if that isn't really necessary then I love the rug you selected.

see if you can grab a sample of smoke. I've seen it in rooms and it's rather blue without being too 'baby boy' blue.

look for over-dyed rugs on Etsy, or some of the other rug shops that carry those vintage style rugs.

the really good ones will be in the 300-600 range for a 5x7. I have one in a beautiful cobalt blue that I brought through houzz and it was 450.

    this one is 500

this one is out of stock on Manhattan Rugs, but look at this gorgeous shade. would look amazing next to your sofa/chairs accented w/gold metal on a few tables or lights.

    amazon has this one 6x10

I usually like the yellow/gold wall colors. Very luxe. I am not sure of your exact shade, but I think if you are not going to go for a deeper saturation on the gold color, another nice option for LR might be a cream or linen color.

If you decide to paint, I like to recommend Benjamin Moore's Natura line, or something similar.

And if you don't need the fan, you could consider bringing in a chandelier or some type of light fixture. One that is dimmable is always good.

And this corner console cabinet is available from Etsy seller.

You can order paint samples from Samplize. Keeps you from having to run out for samples. They're peel and stick so you can move them around the room.

    kcastle129 thanked katinparadise

Shoot; Samplize is closed due to Covid-19. Fingers crossed they will come through this.

you can go to HD and get a color match using Behr paint. their samples are only $3. the color won't be exact (if it's a BM or SW color) but it will be close enough for you to see if it will work. BM sample cans are almost $10, so I know that can add up. Or, find a Behr color that you like and use their paint.

Beth H, I just used BM Palladian Blue in another room and was quite happy with their paint so I'll go there when appropriate. Thanks again!
