Sickly Euonymus

Although healthy for years one of our Manhattan Euonymus' is doing poorly this spring, as shown. The leaves should be uniformly glossy dark green. Instead, they have white spots throughout the large (7' X 5') espaliered plant. The spots are whiter than shown here and are not raised but rather integral to the leaf. Thus I suspect it is not an insect problem but rather one of physiology. The weather here has been neither too wet nor too dry, though mildew or fungus remain possibilities.

I'm hoping a viewer will recognize the malady and identify it for me.
