Nematodes are tiny worms, the two dark things might be slugs (as in sawfly larvae and not the snail relatives).

I didn't think I was correct on the nematodes, but nematodes are roundworms, and not snail relatives (mollusks). Diane

Thanks for your responses. Sorry that the photos are not that great. The black spots are secretions of some kind. The drops on the leaves fell from the bud I took pictures of.

i thought it was botrytis, as well. Can it lead to secretions, as well as the rot?

I've had roses experience botrytis a few times, but there have never been those secretions. That really puzzles me. I hope you solve this mystery. Diane
