Yes, that's a quince. They are eaten all over the world. Lots of recipes are available for cooking with quince and one sliced into an apple pie is delicious. They also smell wonderful. Look up Membrillo to eat with cheese.

Quince can also be juiced or can be sauced, just like applesauce, those two preparations use a lot more fruit..
