I don't know what you have budgeted for painting cabinetry, but done correctly with sanding, priming and several good-quality top coats from paint brands like Milesi, ICA or Renner, you could actually "reface" these cabinets for not too much difference in price, I think. The arch-style doors automatically date your design, so if you went with new cabinet doors and drawer fronts from some company like TaylorCraft Cabinet Door Company, you could get an overall modern look with your refresh. Some people who have those soffits also choose to take them out and take cabinetry to the ceiling which would expand your storage for the small space. Companies in many towns specialize in refacing, so you might check out what your area offers, and take a look at TaylorCraft. I've done a fair amount of research on 3rd-party door suppliers, and they have a state-of-the-art facility with some beautiful designs I've not seen replicated elsewhere as far as graduated rail, stile, and center panel profiles.

I was also going to add resurfacing the ceiling (beware asbestos! if ever doing anything to disturb potential asbestos, such as popcorn ceilings)...this one has a bead board ceiling. Cute!
