kitchen rug or mat ?

I have a temporary rug in front of my sink and dishwasher. It was my old rug from my old kitchen, that I would love to replace. My question is do I need another in front of my fridge and coffee station? Or should I put a small one in front of the fridge and stove ? Basically my question is placement LOL. Help !

I have used this arrangement for years and it works just fine. I use a different runner in front of my sink/dw for the seasons. Good luck!

I use a kitchen mat in front of my sink for comfort because my back doesn't feel to well after I wash the dishes. When we make a spill, it's much easier to clean up the floor than a rug.

“My question is do I need another in front of my fridge and coffee station?”

Area rugs in a kitchen serve little purpose, especially if you have wood floors. If you have tile, they can cushion you while you are standing in place. Otherwise, from a functional perspective, they just catch dirt and serve as a trip hazard. I’m not a fan, although I know some people use them to break up the monotony of flooring and add color to a space.

You don’t need symmetry in your floor rugs, but if you want it, go right ahead.

@eam44 sorry I do not know how to reply directly to you .
I’m having New kitchen remorse lately. My kitchen is not even 3 months old and I already feel I made huge mistakes. It’s too white and boring ! I regret not doing a black counter. I went back and forth on it . That’s part of the issue (I want to create more interest somehow) and the other part is my kids drop water from the fridge constantly and I worry about the floors.

It’s a lovely space! And if you need a spill catcher, absolutely keep it, and get a second if you like. If you want some color, add some art to your wall. But I think you did a great job.

I have used a large jute rug in my kitchen for years and love how it warms it up, provides interest and is easy to maintain. Has no greater tripping hazard than a rug anywhere else in the home, just have to be sure it doesn’t slide. I wouldn‘t suggest two rugs as it will feel patchy - a larger rug for sink area for greater impact and protection for floors would work best I think.

i'd probably put a 26 in by 7 ft runner in front of fridge. and coordinating mat in front of sink. BIG BOX stores have these on line..you can pick up. The patterns and colors and so on are really fun...not expensive and they are durable. You can sponge a food drop and it comes off. You can vacuum lightly or shake out the small sized mat. When you tire of it...you can replace...Your space is nice...no remorse needed. How many feet across? You can get an Ikea work cart/table/butcher block in the foreground it looks like. different sized pieces avail. they have lower shelves for baskets/etc...just a nice simple addition at not great cost if you want some wood/or painted color to break up the white.

I have runner rugs in front of my main work zones....the stove and the sink/prep area.

I have a wellness mat (very cushioned) in front of my sink. I would add a runner or mat in front of the sink. Adding a mat in front of both will look very patchy. Check out ruggable.com. They are washable mats with pads that come in so many sizes and colors / patterns.

I do not like rugs in kitchens IMO they are a tripping hazard and I find wiping up the floor much easier than washing the rug .

I don’t like rugs in a kitchen cause they get grungy. Think about how often you wipe up drips and crumbs off your kitchen floor. Now think about those same things going into a rug in a kitchen. People will say to just get the kind of rug for the kitchen that goes in the washing machine. Fine. It’s still one more cleaning chore to add to my list, versus a 10-second wipe with a sponge on my floor when a spill occurs or when I notice some crumbs.

Connie, I hope you don't feel too bad about NOT using black counters! I think your kitchen looks wonderful!

Ours (black counters) were here when we bought this house, & initially I thought they were fine. Now I can't wait to change them out! I'm probably older than you, but I set things down, (spice lids, etc.) and can't find them again!! LOL!

We were "told" that the granite was originally about $70+ a sq ft! Yikes!

What about a combination with the best features of both? A mat with the pretty prints of a rug. I got a namamat recently and love it in my white kitchen: https://www.little-nomad.com/products/namamat-dove Looks so much better than the solid black mat that I was using previously.

Lovely kitchen. Would you mind sharing the size of the room? Or even the layout? Thank you.
