Thank you so much BenT! You just made my day! It looks like it definitely is Climbing First Prize. It's incredible how you were able to identify it so fast. It's crazy how it just sprouted up in the back of the farm where the canal water comes through. I'm thinking that someone who lives further up the canal from us was trimming their roses and one of the cuttings floated down to the farm through the canal opening. It sounds kind of far-fetched but I have no idea how else it could have gotten there. Thanks again, I can't thank you enough!

Hi jerijen! Thank you so much! I am in the Bay Area but our family farm is in a small town in the Central Valley. We have owned the property for about 13 years. I think the rose sprouted around 10 years ago, give or take a few years.

If you wrote that as a story, everyone would tell you it was very unlikely -- Have you tried taking cuttings of the rose, and sharing it around?

Hi ingrid! Thank you so much! We have a few shrines for the Virgin Mary and Jesus at our home and at the farm, and every year when the roses bloom we fill the shrines with bouquets of roses.

Hi jerijen! I am so lucky to have this rose, I didn't realize how hard it is to find. It's a miracle how we ended up with it. We took cuttings and rooted them two years ago and brought two of the plants back to our house. There is one more plant that we are going to bring back to the house to plant along the fence. We planted about twenty more cuttings this year, and they have all taken root! We are going to cover the rest of the chain-link fence at the farm with them. Unfortunately there is no one that I know that is interested in roses to share cuttings with, but when the pandemic is over I will try and figure out how to ship rose cuttings so I can share the rose with people on this forum who are interested.

Surprisingly there is another rose on the farm that popped up out of the blue. This rose came up a few years after the 'Climbing First Prize'. It is a beautiful yellow rose with an orange tint to the edge of the petals that sprouted close to the house where my uncle had planted a patch of green onion. The only roses we had were some unknown red bushes and some bushes of 'Bill Warriner,' but no yellow roses at all! Another mystery rose! If it is in bloom when we go to the farm I will take pictures and post them here. We have taken cuttings of the rose this year and a few of them have rooted! I will try and post updates soon.

Your shrine looks very similar to the style of my grandmas as well. She was from Czechoslovakia and belonged to a Byzantine Catholic Church . Beautiful artwork and so dear to my heart to see similar style ! :)

Hi Lilyfinch! Thank you for your kind words! We also belong to the Catholic church. My grandparents gave us the Virgin Mary icon, and it is from Damascus, Syria. Your grandma sounds like a wonderful lady. It is so cool that she is from Czechoslovakia, whose national flower is the rose!

Hello everyone! Thank you so much! It is a very resilient rose. It's blooms withstand 100+ degree temperatures, gets water only when we flood the land which is once every blue moon in the summertime, gets absolutely no fertilizer, and it is pruned lightly only once a year, yet it manages to give us a whole fountain of blooms every year. You can see and smell the rose from over a mile away. The perfume is intoxicating! Each bloom is bigger than my hand and they have the most perfect form and beautiful color, with a lovely deep pink edge and a delicate pink/peach center. There are two nurseries that carry 'Climbing First Prize' in California, Armstrong Garden Centers and Windmill Nursery for those who live here who are interested. I believe Armstrong Garden Centers is offering curbside pickup at the moment. Godwilling we will be heading to the farm very soon, so I will make sure and take lots of pictures.

Has anyone found a source for Climbing First Prize? I’ve looked for several years now, the only source I’ve found is Roses Unlimited, but they haven’t propagated it in the last few years that I’ve checked with Pat.

@damask_rose_zone9b please let me know if there’s some way to get cuttings of this rose. I’m in the Central Valley of CA (south of Sacramento) now too
