Refurb or curb?

I have a small dining room which with my newly purchased round table, I feel limits my furniture options. I was thinking that going thinner and taller might be the answer. These are two end pieces of a wall unit I am playing around with before they hit the curb. I realize the 90’s pinkish whitewash look has got to go, these are real wood pieces (not MDF) that I can paint and probably stain. The question is, should I bother? Does the scale and look of these even work in this room? I removed the glass shelving thinking wood shelves would help update it a bit, but that’s just an amateur guess. Any constructive advice Is welcome!

What if you move them both to the middle of the wall side by side? Maybe paint them coral ? Maybe black?

    Hi Paula

Thank you for your response! Actually there needs to be a space in the middle for when I expand the table to an oval. Along the lines of color, I was thinking a dark color like charcoal, so your suggestion of black confirms that direction. So I appreciate it.

Move them to the middle. Flank them with two of the chairs. Turn the runners 45 degrees and line up the remaining chairs with the runners. I don't think wood shelves would be an improvement because the lighting in the units would only be for the top shelf. Color could be one of the colors from the rug or bright, your choice.

I didn't think about the lighting factor with wood shelves, thank you DM. Moving them to the middle creates a clearance issue for the chair when the table is expanded, but this seems like the popular opinion so far...

Because of the functional issue, I would try not to move them to the middle of the wall. Can you envision placing a very large picture (or a gallery of pictures) in that space? The gap looks awkward but I think you can make it into a feature.

IMO that is a small space and I would curb them because you will feel like you need to now use the shelves for IMO a bunch of clutter that will make the space feel even smaller. Get a fabulous piece of art maybe really large and that is it on that wall and some beautiful drapes not see throughs like anice faux or real silk,

I’m not a fan of having both of them because of the scale of everything .... my opinion is to take one of them out and try angling the other in the corner. It’d be a better “weight”, and you could display pretties.

Perhaps having the table extend on a diagonal to the corner would give enough space. I rotate my table 90 degrees when I extend it. Angling one in the corner will take up a lot of space unless it is a shallow angle.

Thank you everyone who responded so far, these have been great..

.Patricia, you are so right, in fact I just cleaned that unit out of 20 years worth of junk! However I am at a loss for another piece of furniture for that room that will work, its so empty now with just the table and chairs, I was trying to get creative with height

Jinx, the middle unit of those two pieces is a narrow china/curio cabinet on the top with the same drawer storage configuration on the bottom, if my husband doesn't revolt, I could have him move that to the corner to see how it works. But I fear DM's comment will be correct in that it might take up too much room....

Ahh, yes, I see what you’re both saying. Maybe try them both for a while and see how it works? It hard to tell from pics, maybe in real life they aren’t as large as they look to us. :)

Install the table leaf and see how tight the room will actually be with the tower shelves. Ta It looks like with the full table the room will be stuffed kwim. I would hang art/pictures The tall cabinets just seem out of portion with the room size to me. IMO You could also do some type of nice centerpiece on the table to pretty the room up
