I transplanted a couple of dozen Townsendia leptotes yesterday and was amazed at the length of the roots [5-6 inches] compared to the diminutive 1/2” leaves. My question is what to do with the roots when transplanting to a larger pot? Roots are much too long for any reasonable sized pot and I dislike curling or folding the roots into the new pot. I have tried trimming back the roots of plants with such root systems [penstemons are notorious for their long roots] but my lackadaisical attempts to ‘follow-up’ and compare results have so far failed. What do other plant people do, and what were the results?
