I live near Bloomington, Indiana. I love plants with fall color if that helps. I would say fall color and screening would be at the top of my list.

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Quick Fire’ is stunning when allowed to grow to its full potential, dead hardy and reliably blooming for Indiana. Hydrangea quercifolia has nice red fall color. I like Ken’s suggestion of Heptacodium as well. One of the large Fothergilas might do, and have great fall color. My Vibernum carlesii has wonderfully fragrant spring flowers, and gets nice fall color - leaves turn golden yellow with a red edge. And in your zone, just about any Japanese maple might do all that you want. Also agree you’ll need to move further out into the lawn, to get space for a large shrub or small tree.

These deciduous kinds will work if you only want summer screening, like for sitting outside during summer only.

Another small understory tree you could try is Autumn Brilliance serviceberry. It has flowers in the spring and very nice fall color.
