flooring pattern help

Hi House Family ,

First and most importantly, I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy, both physically and mentally.

I am renovating my home one floor at a time. It is now time to do the lower level after completing the first floor.

The stairs lead from the open kitchen/living area down into the TV room. I am working on a stair carpet that will coordinate with my kitchen tile, Tabarka. I know that a solid patterned carpet would be best however, with no windows in the basement, I am trying to infuse a bit of lighter

color into the carpet via a pattern. The Tabarka tile is a busy pattern; it is the show stopper in the kitchen. In the pics, I have laid down the sample carpet that I am considering (ignore the Ralph Lauren check that is currently installed). Can I put these two patterns together?

Thoughts?

It's OK, but I would prefer to go even lighter--to the color of the background of your kitchen tile.

No to the lighter...could really show dirt quickly. What’s that swatch, putty coloured?, to the left of carpet samples. That picks up the background color in your tiles and since it is (almost) the color of dirt......could be good!

yes, cannot go lighter bc of dirt. 2 young kids and a dog. the colors are not showing well in the pics at all. that swatch is a dish towel that is grey. the colors do work easily together (even though the pics dont represent). I am concerned about the two patterns...

I think your sample is great. It is more of a texture rather than a pattern, so it works with the tile. I also think the color looks good with your geige walls and hardwood in the hallway. It looks like an exact match to the edges of your tile.

    thank you

I have a question please. What form of emergency egress do you have in your basement if there are no windows? Is there a door that leads outside?

Let’s step back a second as you may not be seeing the forest through the trees. This carpet will be used in the basement space? Pics of that would be helpful. I actually like the brownish tone as it relates to your wood floors. But ANY carpet you are considering for the actual basement area should be considered in that space. If this is just for the stairs I still like the brown (matching wood tone). You don’t have to match the tile.

Thanks. Because you can see the stairs from the whole first floor (row home) and because they will run right up to the busy kitchen tile, I just want to make sure that it coordinates. The textured carpet sample in pic will run throughout basement as well. It works fine down there; the little flecks of white brighten it without it being a lighter carpet (which I can't have-kids/dog). A picture wouldn't be helpful because there is no natural light, I am changing wall color and redoing the lighting. No furniture yet either as I am waiting to confirm carpet choice before moving onto fabrics.

I love your kitchen tile. Have you considered no carpet on the stairs? Could it be removed and either spruce up the wood underneath or paint the stairs? You could then have more options for the basement carpeting.

Thanks! I love it too. It was the price of a small car, lol. So, I'd better love it! Must have carpet on the stairs because of safety issues. Young children with socks and me with bouts of vertigo require carpeted stairs (the staircase above has runner) ...and besides, the treads underneath are not a nice quality wood.

    I would

go with a dove grey that is not a sisal texture.

I think it’s a great choice — they look good together, and I like the texture. It compliments the fabulous tile, without competing with it ... but also without disappearing next to it.

Your house looks beautiful! You have great taste and style. :)

I agree Jinx - Laura the natural sisal color is timeless and goes perfectly. And so sorry about your vertigo - I suffer from that too from time to time. Really stinks.

Thank you all. Now on to fabrics for the sofas!

kateinparadise - I live in a city with many older homes where basements typically do not have regular windows -- usually a couple of tiny windows where the basement walls rise just beyond the exterior ground level. If/when the basement space is converted to a sleeping area, egress windows must be installed to meet code.

Yes, they are called hopper windows.

I see. I'm surprised that egress windows don't have to be installed in any finished basement space. Fires occur during the daytime as well as overnight. Thank you for the explanation.

This house was built to code in 2004.
