For me, it's not about the space, it's more about what I can train myself and others to do. You can certainly make the area in the second picture but the only place I see that can happen is if one of those doors is to a closet. If it is, remove the door and make it a drop space.

You have more room in the entry area, but unless you can train every one in your house to utililze some kind of storage unit you put in the hall, all hope is lost. :0(

Where do you drop things right now? Put an official "drop station" exactly where you already drop things. This way you're not changing habits, just the look of it.

Where do you take off your shoes? Where do you plonk your jacket when you take it off? Where do you dump the letters?

I would have hooks for coats on that big wall, boot drop below. A basket for holding mittens, hats, and boot socks...

I have somewhat of a challenge myself, but I'm thinking of solving it with an Ikea rolling cart, letter dump on top, mittens and hats in the middle, trowel and gardening gloves on the bottom.

I would prefer to keep the entryway clutter-free by simply adding a bench for putting shoes on. You have a nearby closet which can easily be used for storage.

If you prefer to drop your stuff, you can always go this route:

we put a row of hooks by the door, a long shoe rack under, and a basket at the end for gloves, beanies, etc. it's important for us to be able to hang things in the open so they can dry off. I try to make sure only our "current favorites" are on the hooks, otherwise it's difficult to keep it looking uncluttered. off-season items go in the tiny closet nearby.
