I'm going to assume your looking for a small, multi stemmed tree. Not something that actually looks like a parachute.

No parachute =) I really like the Leonard Messel. I had previously considered that for the east side of the house, but opted for Jane instead. Redbuds are beautiful, but I'm concerned about the size so close to the house. I'm considering buying a Bloodgood Japanese Maple for another area, but maybe could also consider that for the front?. I've heard they do well in Zone 4.

If you are generally concerned about size 'Bloodgood' is a large variety, with otherwise similar 'Moonfire' being better for small places. However since USDA 4 is outside of the normal range for Japanese maples I don't know if 'Moonfire' would be suitable. Another aspect is that there is a history of mixed seedlings with varying characteristics being put on the US market by some producers as "Bloodgood". So it seems possible you could end up buying a plant as 'Bloodgood' that is genetically different from material seen to be locally hardy, and have it turn out that the one you bought is not hardy there.

To add on the advice from the previous comment, after the winter of 2018-2019 there was widespread damage to Japanese maples in the upper midwest. I can't speak specifically to how Bloodgood did, but I'd suggest caution. If that picture represents the prominence of the location in zone 4 I think the right winter will come along, eventually, and cause devastating damage to it. I'd use something reliable. Korean maple won't give you the purple leaf color but you will get the interesting leaf shape, form and good fall color.
