Range and Refrigerator

We are building a new home and I need some help deciding the appliances. We are set on a 48” 6 burner with a griddle gas fange. But now to decide the refrigerator size, do I have to go with a 48” since our range is big? Or will a 36” refrigerator look okay?
Our kitchen is pretty big and it will accommodate any size. I am just wondering if the bigger fridge is worth the extra 5k.

Fridge size has nothing to do, imo, with the size of the range. I have a 55" range and my fridge and freezer are each 36" columns.

What you should be asking yourself is whether a 36" fridge will accommodate your needs as a family. Do you bulk shop? Cook large batches of food? Purchase a lot of produce? How you use your fridge will determine what size you should purchase.

66”-72” of built refrigeration which is way more than a 5K upgrade , 2 DW’s, 54“-60” of externally 12” ducted hood, a makeup air $ystem, drawer microwave, wine fridge, beverage fridge, ice maker, etc.

You need everything proportionate. And at the same $$$ level. 40K+ appliance budget.

Size the refrigerator to meet your needs in the foreseeable future.

For me, a 48" refrigerator can hide a gallon of milk for six months better than a 36" refrigerator can.

We have an extra refrigerator in the garage and a chest freezer, and a separate wine cooler at the bar.
So really its just for looks.

Go with a 42” Sub Zero FD fridge. Fits a ton of stuff, great layout, best insulated fridge on the market, and best customer service in the business. 4 1/2 years with ours, not one issue. First SZ we had was still going strong at 25 years, when we sold our previous home.

    Worth every penny.

What can you afford and what do you need? You will always find here people telling you you cannot live with a $10K + fridge. Evaluate your needs. We cannot know that.

@lg222...nobody says you cannot live withOUT a $10K+ fridge. Of course you can. But, my take from the OP’s post is that she can afford that price. She’s just asking if it’s worth it.

Since the rule of thumb is, buy the best appliances you can afford, and a 42” SZ is within the OP’s reach, why shouldn’t she enjoy the benefits of the best fridge...and, not have to worry about calling repairmen?

It's a nice fridge, but for the 3 of us, it would be very oversized. All is a question of what people need and want.

We are two...empty nesters. Used to have a 36” SZ, over/under, in our former home. We were always running out of space. Never have, with the 42” FD.

If you use a lot of fresh produce...veggies and fruit, and store leftovers in containers, plus all the other stuff...jarred items, dairy products, etc., the fridge fills up quickly. The larger fridge means shopping can happen less frequently.

Darbuka, glad you showed the filled inside of the 42" SZ. If we end up building that is the one I am considering. We currently have the SZ columns 36" fridge + 24" freezer and love the look and function, but new location would not justify spending that much.

    @chispa...You won’t be sorry. It’s a great fridge.

What I showed isn’t even at full capacity. To avoid going to supermarkets during this pandemic, we’ve been ordering from a restaurant supply business that’s selling to homes, in paired down quantities. Some of the items...celery, bok choy, cauliflower, cabbage, dill, cilantro, things like that, come in quantities somewhat beyond our normal usage. Tallest, and fullest bunches of celery I’ve ever seen! Needless to say, the fridge is stuffed to the gills. One good thing to come out of this...we’re eating more veggies than we used to!

I’m going with a 48 inch sub zero fridge with only two of us in the house and I’m looking forward to it. My Range is only a 36’ range but the kitchen designer laid it out quite well.

Working with a competent Kitchen Designer answers these kinds of questions before you even know that it’s a question.

Well, Kitchen Designers are human and have biases too. My KD would probably not have picked the 36+24 SZ and certainly wouldn't have paneled/integrated them. He has a bias against paneled fridges, probably too many bad ones in the 90s! After it was all done, he told me I was right, and paneled was the best choice for this kitchen. I would have been miserable with 60" of stainless, so I don't let others make decisions for my home and the way I live.
