You can install a hinge pin door stop that will prevent the door from swinging open all the way.

I like the bench there and would install a hinge pin that has a stopper on it. I would not stagger the hooks. in fact I would get a 1 x 4 cut the width of the space again it to match the color of the bench and do black hooks to match the legs of the bench lined up and spaced evenly on it. Mount the wood into the studs and then your hooks will actually be usable and be able to bear weight This photo shows a double row which you don't need with the bench there but gives you an idea.
