I agree that both the wall and the floor need to go. Can you rip the wall tile off and cover the walls with bead board? I think the floor just needs to be ripped out as well. Paint and/peel and stick will not do well on a floor.

It's Red/green Onyx, not marble. And no, do not 'paint' over it or do decals. If you don't like it, remove it. But then you'd still have the ugly tile and wall color to deal with. so take care of that first. Then the vanity. leave the floor.

I would remove the tile on the walls before I'd do the floor. the wall tile is super busy looking. So is the granite and the floors. But out of all of them I like the floor the best.

just do regular drywall and paint it. That purple color is horrible. (who were the people that redid that bathroom and were they colorblind??)

If you want to update the vanity at some point, just do a soft white or wood vanity w/solid quartz countertop.

Paint the walls a soft sage green or warm white.

Beth H, wow I never would have pictured the bathroom looking so nice with that tile! Thank you so much for your thoughtful input. We were trying not to do a whole bathroom Reno because we plan on moving next year, but I really like what you suggested. And thank you for the correction on the type of flooring we have. And as for the prior owner design choices- it’s been interesting. Think salmon color walls, cherry wood cabinets, oak ceilings, black/brown/white marble tile in the kitchen... pale pink tiles and hot yellow wall paint in master bath.... a purple more obnoxious than the one in the picture all throughout the bottom floor of the house. It was unbelievable !

Is this a powder room or a full bath? What kind of tile is in the tub/shower?

I like the floor, I think it's really interesting. It's the wall tile and countertop that don't work for me or with the floor. I can't believe this bathroom didn't make them dizzy! Honestly, the things people do to their houses...

I'd switch out the bathroom counter to a more neutral cream and paint the wall a cream color, as well.

This floor more! It really is just everything around it that makes it look bad. We weren’t thinking of doing such a big project (tipping down wall tile) and since the wall tile connects with the shower, it would be hard to keep the shower tiles while ripping down the rest of the wall tile.

I love the floor. The wall tile is a bit much.

If you are planning on moving next year, maybe just a fresh coat of paint on the upper walls and trim to complement what is there... and let future home buyers decide what they want to keep or replace.

Well then. I would at least remove the wall tile around the sink and toilet area then paint a neutral color. Change out the countertop to a solid surface Corian in an off white. Hide the shower tile with a neutral curtain. You can buy an extra long curtain to cover the whole shower area.

I have to say all the wall tile needs to go the flooring is interesting and really should be the star . The tub/ shower surround will need to be completely redone but with help from you tube you should be able to do the waterproofing and tile DIY . If not into that I would just leave the whole thing and take a bit of alower price and move on . There is no way of hiding that shower tile .

The shower curtain is a great idea. You could get away with leaving the tile in the shower. I’d still remove it on the wall. To save on drywall repair, you could do a simple vinyl wainscot. Then just paint it and the wall above. Look for a Remnant quartz top or something neutral. Shouldn’t be that much money if u do some of the work yourselves. Plus, it will better to buyers when u need to sell.

Sounds like you don't have the money now for a full overhaul but I would start saving and do it right. In the mean time, I would paint the walls a creamy white and replace the mirror. Get a solid color shower curtain in a nice fabric cause you do not need another pattern in there. Then, wait to replace the floors and remove the wall tile. Not sure how you feel about the vanity but that would also factor in to overall changes too, just depends on your preference.

Agree 100% with Beth H, the floor is fine, it's the tile & granite that have to go.

the wall tiles are the worse. you can keep them in the shower since it's far enough away.

Once you get rid of the wall tile and hide the shower with a neutral curtain, the vanity top may not look so bad. I would start with getting rid of the wall tile and the mirror. Fix the walls and repaint everything a soft neutral color and then reevaluate. If you are hiring a professional to do the work, you may not be able to do the work in stages so will have to make the decision up front.

We decided to keep the floor tiles, take down the wall tiles, paint the walls and replace the granite and most people suggested. We will be doing the work ourselves. Appreciate everyone’s advice!

Looks like someone bought all these tiles on sale from costco and put it in the bathroom:) Have you considered of keeping the tile and place nice neutral vinyl plank over the marble tiles. Removing tiles is messy. Also ,if so much hated tiles on the wall are installed properly you can install other tiles on top.

I actually really like the floor I would not change it. It's natural and not like every other modern bath. Beth H is right on with her comments. Work with the floor tile. If you are planning on moving soon, I wouldn't put much money into this bath. You bought it, someone else could over look it too. Any money you spend now may be totally removed by a new owner with different taste. The people that did this bath liked it even if it looks terrible to the rest of us. I find the wall tile much more offensive. As an accent it would be okay but its overpowering with that much in the room even if it coordinated. Paint the walls. Maybe even paint the tile wainscoting. It would hold up better than painting the floor or shower. Or add a wood waistcoat to cover the tile or damage to the wall if you remove it. Get a shower curtain that works with the floor and keep it closed to hide the shower tile. Bring in colors from the floor tile in art and accessories. Live plants if you have good light. Would love to see what you do with it.

Krysta, do you like the floor? Just by itself marble tile is beautiful and timeless-it is marble! Just by itself tiles on the wall-designers are able to to wonders with them, and those tiles were more expensive than marble tiles when they were trending. Now the combination is personally killing my eyes and that is probably what Krysta is trying to work with. At the end it is Krysta money that she is willing to put against this crazy combination.

Simona, it's onyx, not marble. And she's keeping it. The wall tile and vanity are the offending culprits here. she's changing them.

Simona - I decided to keep the floor thanks to the great suggestions above and Beth H’s visual really helped me to see that this floor is beautiful and everything around it is a mess! We hope to move next year or the year after, so looking to update this bathroom but not do a complete overhaul. Hoping we can just take down the wall tiles/shower tiles, paint the walls, exchange the vanity countertop.

I didn't have time to read through all the comments, but I did read that you were planning on keeping the floor and ripping the wall tile off. Also, every comment (again, I didn't read them all) seemed to be opposed at painting the floor tile, which I agree with. But, did anyone suggest painting the wall tile instead of ripping it down? This is a fairly easy project that would have great impact. Search online and read, and look at before and afters. Keep the floor and the counter, and paint the wall tile something neutral. Do a small section. If you don't like it, then go on with the big project of ripping it down. Just a suggestion!

Hi Cindy, I thought about this and I think the tiles on the wall outside of the shower would hold up well, but I’m worried about the times inside the shower not holding up well due to water from the shower. It’s our guest bath, but my parents visit us often. I also bathe by toddler in that bath (he splashed a ton). So I’m just not sure how it would hold up!?

I would encourage you to do some research. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
