You know, I noticed the same thing on some of my hosta. Some of mine have also "heaved"...where the roots right at the dirt line are now showing...I'm not sure what's going on!

I agree with nhl. I wouldn't be concerned at all, loads of other roots underground.

Several of my large older hostas are the same way and have been for quite a while. I don't pay it much mind, they do well and doesn't seem to bother their growth. One thing i try to do every year is add a layer of compost to the entire bed and in the process i might cover some of the roots a couple inches away from the crown.

i will yell.... ENTIRELY NORMAL ....

do not fix that which is not broken .. do not bury the crown further.. and surely no need to dig it up.. and set it back.. or stunt future growth ...

this is not heave ... if your hosta heaved.. dig it up.. and replant it properly .. but to repeat .. that is not what this is ...

btw: if you had mulch ... not only would you not see this... but you would have more slugs.. lol ...

Well Ken, there’s no mulch yet because all the ground cover was pulled as you know. I figure it will be easier to do the drench without anything in the way. Drench is planned for Sunday, almost all hostas are showing some and the weather is to be in the 70s! Perfect for killing those nasty 🐌 ! Then I think maybe pine needle mulch? Would think they would be better than wood nuggets? I notice that many pictures that get posted just have pine needles. Maybe the slugs don’t like them as much as wood? Yes????????

Yes, pine needle mulch is sharp to slugs.
