Yes, weed n feed is not recommended. Why not? Because you need herbicide in mid April and fertilizer in late May. You get into trouble applying them at the wrong times. Another reason why not is the product is hard to apply. It needs to go onto wet grass, and keeping it wet enough during application is a job for more than one person. It's far too easy to not use it. Plus, for your problem it won't work. You have grassy weeds mixed in with grass. There are very few herbicides that will select certain weedy grasses out of a turf grass and kill it. If you really need to have a full monoturf type lawn, then the best time to renovate is in August after the summer heat has broken. It involves killing the entire lawn and starting over. It's not that hard to do but it is an investment in money and time.

You have a grassy weed in grass. There are only a few herbicides that work and for those you have to have to correct turfgrass and correct weed for those herbicides to work.

The problem with timing herbicide is getting it down during cooler weather. But in your case, you don't know what to apply.

The problem with timing fertilizer is overstimulating a lawn that is already growing fast. You don't want to apply fertilizer early in the spring, because the grass is already growing at full speed. If you force it to grow faster it will, basically, burn out before May. Then it will need more fertilizer in May.
