What is wrong with my kumquat tree?

It had yellow leaves when it arrived. About a week ago I fertilized the soil with slow-release fertilizer, it rained the last few days too... I don't think anything has happened yet, how long does it take to see a change?
P.S. I have removed most of the fruit so that the tree can establish better, good idea? Thanks for responding!
