Heating & Air Conditioning

Air return grill size.

I am currently redoing all my bifold doors. One of them is for my air handler. I want to put a door and add a grill to the door or I can cut the wall and install one there. I have a 2011 4 ton unit. I have been looking and so say a 24x24 grill will work, some say a 24x30. I have also found 2 formulas on how to chose. One used 144 another 200 in the formula. I am all confused.

Rule #1. Use the largest popular size filter grill as possible. Rule #2. There is no such thing as too large when it come's to intake side of system. Rule #3 Use pleated filters (Thicker the better but 1" will surfice)

If this is just a grill without filter,I'd choose closer to 500 sq inches than 200 but anything over 400 should be plenty.
