i know nothing about fig...

but i would wait to see if it buds out .. before i started cutting on it ...

i suspect it already did ..and they failed..and its dead..which would make pruning moot ...

some parts of the leader trunk seems shriveled ... and i doubt that is good ...

I've never grown a fig, but have read that Chicago can often be killed back in harsh winters (z5)... as a result, people in very cold climates tend not to prune them because nature usually takes care of it for them. I'd be curious to see what happens with the growth next, so I wouldn't prune it. lol!

The soil in the pot looks bone dry to me and like it's pulling away from the edges of the pot. If so, it needs to be thoroughly watered!

Looks like a tissue culture fig based on how it’s suckering. I would prune off all suckers and keep just the single main trunk. If it was in garage all winter in 7b it won’t have freeze damage

Figs grow incredibly easily from cuttings.....no reason at all to go to the additional expense of TC!! Not sure why anyone would bother with TC'd figs! Which will also have little bearing on how the plant will grow. By nature Ficus carica is a multi-stemmed tree/large shrub.

They are fully hardy here and grow into small trees. The need for any pruning is rare, other than to thin the canopy or remove damaged stems.

Agristarts is the main distributor of tissue culture figs in America. Many retail nurseries resell these online and brick and mortar. There is a problem with some of them suckering like mad and not fruiting. It is unknown why this is happening. Typically you can take an air layer or cutting from a tissue culture fig and have it fruit sooner than the mother tree. There has been much discussion about this on the “our figs” forum website.
