Raised perennial beds in Alberta

Hi, I'm wondering if I can build raised beds to grow perennials in. We live in the Pigeon Lake area. The beds will face south. We had flower beds at our previous house but it seemed a fight to keep the grass from growing in. Any suggestions are appreciated.
