How to renew this begonia

The pictures below come from a friend who lives in Zone 7. I saw this begonia in her garden last year and it was stunning. She grew it in a large footed planter. For the winter it was in an enclosed shed; it survived but needs refreshing. What should she do to bring it back to its former glory. I know there are some begonia experts here who can give her/us guidance (and maybe even tell us what type it is). Thanks. - June

Remove any dead rhizomes, add some fresh soil to bring the soil level up a little bit - not a lot. Water as needed and enjoy.

If you wanted to start it anew, you could cut the rhizomes close to the surface and root the cuttings (you can also start it by leaf cuttings). Let the old rhizomes in there and add a little extra soil and water as needed.

The begonia looks like 'Hugh McLaughlin' (was the president of the Scottish Begonia Society). I think the begonia is a hybrid of Antoon Hoefnagels of the Netherlands. It is an easy and vigorous grower if I ID'ed it correctly.

Hc mcdole: Just a follow up to thank you. My friend followed your instructions and sent me a picture of basically stubs in dirt when she was finished. Yesterday she sent a picture of the same plant now. Wow...it's back to the lush beauty I saw in her garden last year. What an amazing 3 week transformation.
