PS the leaves are shreded with my mower.

My composter manual suggests that each layer should be no more than 6". If you are using dead (brown) leaves, they are carbon, so you can layer them alternatively with fresh grass clippings. If the leaves are green, they count as nitrogen so would be counted WITH the grass clippings.
