A bush in the middle of the front row died, so we had it removed. The other 3 remaining bushes in that row aren’t super appealing (not to mention the ugly gap that’s left) and block the view of the front door. Dying bushes and over grown purple queen/ purple heart plant (on the left), red flowering plant and ever green type plant that (looks terrible from the back when leaving the house). What would you keep? What would you get rid of? Should we put in mulch or rock around the bushes on the right or what would you replace them with (if anything)?

I'm suggesting you keep everything to the left of the front door and take out the two that block your entrance.

I would remove the Juniper and what I think is Euonymus that block the door. Then reevaluate.

The purple heart can be reduced in height.

Texas is not by any stretch a Zone 3. I’m in north Missouri and I’m in 5B.

You’re totally right, @Little Bug! I didn’t realize I looked at a map of specifically Texas zones (I’m zone 3 in Texas). Zone 8b is my zone.

For me, it would be: remove all shrubs in front of the house and start over. The groundcover around the tree is fine to remain. But the bed itself is not well shaped or positioned. If you want feedback on that, retake the pictures. Stand in front of the door (move in about 5 or 6' closer than the above pictures) and take one picture looking straight at the house. While standing at the exact same spot, pivot and take a second picture where the tree is at the center of the viewfinder.
