Tom Schmid vs Regal Splendor vs Krossa Regal

What is the difference in appearance between TS and RS? Is it that RS has more wave in the leaf and TS none? And is there a difference in blue or the edge color between these two? When looking at the mature plant do they all have the same final shape? Tall and upright? Are the leaves of KR slightly wavy too?

Katyajini, Use the Comparison feature found on the Hosta Library home page. You can do a side-by-side comparison of two hosta at a time. I always use it before ordering.

My RS is still a baby. Using the comparison feature on the hostalibrary.org site, it seems as if you nailed it.

I can't say why, but my Regal Splendors have never done much since I got them around 11 or 12 years ago. In the last 4 years they shrank. Other hostas do just fine in my garden.

I had three Regla Splendors. Now I've combined them into one and put them in a new spot. I'll see how they do this season, but I don't expect much. Over the years I've moved them around the garden in hopes I could find their happy place, letting them live through seasons in morning sun, in full shade, in all-day dappled shade, in afternoon sun. I can't say all Regal Splendors will be a disappointment, but they have been for me.

The online photos are impressive though. Does anyone here have a mature clump that matches the marketing photos?

Thank you Mae and bkay for that resource! I did not know anything about it!! It did give some good photos to help me decide.

liquidfeet, that would be great if someone posts a picture of these hosta!

I will have a good answer to this question later this month. I have Krossa Regal from New Hampshire Hostas last month; it is gorgeous, vase-shaped, blue, elegant, and will an undulating margin. I got Regal Splendor earlier this month. It is similar to KR with a creamy-yellow edge, which deceives the eye that it is less blue than KR; RS's edge turns white as the season goes on as the rest of the leaf turns green (as does KR). Tom Schmid is coming to my garden soon. It is like RS, but the edge is white from the get-go. While shopping initially, I thought I would like the changing nature of RS more. However, I would like to compare it directly to TS. Now that I have RS, I feel like I would prefer the white edge of TS because I think it will allow the leaf to appear more blue than green. I also can envision the subtle sparkle of that narrow white margin of TS in a shady part of my garden that I am developing.

Here is my 'Tom Schmid'. It is stately and reliable. I used to have 'Regal Splendor' which I liked also but lost one winter. They are similar, but different. I do think Tom is more stable and a better grower but they are in different locations so hard to say for sure.
