For me, I cut them to the ground each year because they die back. Keep an eye on the bases of the plants, if you get vigorous growth at the base prune them back to live buds.

One of mine is Fire and Ice. It doesn't usually die back and is now showing signs of leaf bud. The other two (Little Quick Fire and Lava Rose) were new last year and i didn't cut them back. No sign of life so far.

I think that older and more established plants do better than younger ones. I too had a great deal of winter dieback when I planted my two "Firelights" specimens seven years ago in an unideal (northern exposure; limited sunlight) location, but they're both doing fine now and I basically leave them alone after the winter. They're generally both well-behaved and leaf out in mid-May, with flowers (I really should acidify my soil) at the end of June. And if mine survive winter temps in the mid -40c range, with little dieback a the tips, I see no reason to cut them back in the fall.
