Thanks! I kept couple dozens last year and so far 1 streaked and 1 yellow are keepers, most have reverted to no streaking. Not sure if it common?

Am limited with space so gotta make careful choices. This is third culling. How frequently does one evaluate them?

I throw out about a third of the plain ones the first year. I keep the rest until the third year. Then I give 90% away that year. I keep only the best after that. Probably less than a dozen are kept out of the original 400 Or so. I make many crosses each summer.

How do you get the seeds to germinate? I crossed jade cascade (pollen) with Christmas tree gala (pod) but the seeds never sprouted.

So far I have too many keepers. Am hoping as summer progresses it will get clearer. Am thinking this that bloom this year and those that have best shape and color will stay.

third ... the base problem in having too many.. is that you dont have any goals as to the end product ... e.g. if mini yellow squiggly ones where you ultimate goal ... then all but one.. would be trashed as not furthering that goal ...

and those types of goals are all tied up in genetics.. and predicting what to use to achieve such .. ergo.. you would start with a lot less in the first place ...

in my case.. this was the base failure of just collecting all the OP .. open pollinated ... seeds off all my streakers .. i had no goal.. except to grow them all if streaked.. and the streaked mommas gave a lot of streaked babes ...which was why i bought them ... its a very vicious circle ...

as to jims failure ... who knows .. but timing is important ... many of the hosta sexers ... get up at dawn.. to beat the bees to the pollen.. and then figure out when the receptor flowers opens ... and tried to get the wanted pollen onto the flower.. before the bees came to it ... blah..blah..blah ...whatever.. i lost interest at that level of commitment ...

Jim, I use paper towel moist warm area to germinate most of my seeds of any kind unless they have specific requirements.

Hosta seed germinates on a surface and does not need to be buried.

So my goal is miniature hostas, specifically streaked minies that are decent at producing seeds. I do have couple of established small breeders . Am hoping to get few more breeders out of this batch and then cross with whatever mini is blooming.

I like that yellow too, not sure how similar it will end up with other squiggly yellows but this one is mine lol.

This one decided to settle right away it seems. And thus one started getting pinkish tone leaves. I wonder if it is a sort if deficiency?

that green one.. going all yellow looks sick .. or frosted.. or some such.. i might unpot it and look at the roots.. and see if anything is going on ...

are there any hosta which go from green to yellow ... entirely??? .. i dont think so ...
