Crape myrtle - of course!! Why didn’t I realize it before? it is definitely a crepe myrtle. I already had one come up from seed in my flower bed a couple of years ago from a crape myrtle about 10 feet away. The wind blows constantly here in Oklahoma and crape myrtle blossoms are blown all over the place. I procrastinated moving that first seedling to a new location until this spring. By then we just about couldn’t pry it out of the ground! No wonder crape myrtles are so impervious to our relentlessly harsh summers! This new seedling is out further - about 25 feet from the parent but it’s definitely a little crape myrtle. As hard and constant as the wind blows here, I can well believe seedlings can sprout from seed that far away! I better hurry up and get this new seedling moved elsewhere before I have the same trouble lifting it out of the ground like I did the first one!

So nice to have another crape myrtle rather than an invasive honeysuckle!

Yes, honeysuckle is hardy here. My daughter had a beautiful one in her back yard that returned reliably every year. I don’t think it was the wild kind though.

Well, I see Nevermore referred to a ‘plain ok’ invasive honeysuckle‘ instead of a wild one. I don’t know if the yellow ones like I see around here are ‘wild’ or not, but they are very pretty and smell heavenly. I think my daughter’s was white flowering. Don’t know if it was a cultivar or wild but it didn’t seem invasive. it was plenty sprawling though.

There are lots of honeysuckle species, both shrubs and climbers. In the USA there are several invasive shrubby honeysuckles and, afaik, one major invasive climber, Japanese Honeysuckle. A scented, yellow flowered climber could be the latter if the flowers have only a very few trumpets per cluster.
