If the carpet is low-pile gluedown, it can probably be saved by thorough use of a wet vac.

I only use ceramic, stone or non-wool glue-down carpet in basements.

Ya. I'm not sure what my builder's avertion to a sump is by, I asked him a couple different times about a sump pump and I clearly remember him saying you will not need one. I know, I should've insisted.... right.
