House makeover!

last modified: 6 years ago

I wanted the house to have a cottage vibe. I painted limewash on the brick, painted siding; replaced the windows and window roofs with copper, painted front door, new gutters and new lighting. Added cedar posts and cedar ceiling at entryway and build a cedar window box. Before and after below

You did a beautiful job. Congratulations. I would like to add one more detail to your house. The two upper pop out windows need brackets under them. They Can be made very easily by any carpenter and installed with just a couple of screws. It will really complete the look you’re going for.

Whoa. That is an INCREDIBLE redo of the outside. The house is bright and totally adorable. So inviting. I think you give yourself an A+ for this one.

You may not be “crafty”, but your choices for the exterior are beautiful. Congratulations!

The massive bulk of the roof prevents the house from looking cottagey.

Thank you for the kind comments!

Lovely transformation! The only thing I'm not loving is the color of the posts at the front door - the cedar color jumps out at me, taking attention away from the pretty door color.

I prefer the before--but the copper on the before would have added much. I wonder where you got your idea of "cottage"? I think you had a LOVELY cottage look before you white washed it all away.

Another vote for a beautiful transformation! Very nicely done. And whether or not it is “cottagey” doesn’t matter as long as you like it - enjoy!

Thank you, I love it too, so much better than before. I am not a designer so maybe I used the wrong term to describe the look I was going for, and it looks like the professionals have corrected me ;-). I am so much happier now than the way it looked before.

It looks beautiful- I am thinking of doing a lime wash on our house. Were their any issues with your painter?

You house looks great! Love that you lightened the colors and added details. Very good move to leave the columns at the entrance unpainted. Provide a very good level of contrast. Great job!

Great job - you stepped it up from the boring builder's special that it was before.

Carolina Home Lift, I used Romabio limewash and the painter never used it before and had no problem. It is so easy just mix with water and wet brick with hose and paint on. It allows the brick to breathe and looks so pretty with a chalky iridescence. 1 coat lets the brick show through, I used two coats for a more opaque look. It dries really fast.

Had to comment again. Your house transformation is great! Did you do something to the standing seam metal roofing at the bays? It looks different between the before and after photos.

Looks so great! We just put in 8" x 9' cedar posts on a new front portico (small porch remodel) - and love the rustic look that cedar adds!

Norwood Architects, Thank you! I actually replaced the metal window roofs with copper and I had them made a bit higher shape than the previous ones to be in better proportion to the peaks. I love the natural patina of copper.
