Hate my counters and floor

Help! My husband and I purchased an 80’s ranch style around 3 years ago. I have spend the last 3 years doing what I can to make this house home-y for the time we planned to be here (about 5 years). A recent call to the student loan department brought on the realization that we may be here a lot longer than I originally cared to be.

About 2 years ago we replaced our Formica counters with Manchester by Cambria Quartz counters. It was not my original selection but after being told a seam would end up making the pattern look odd. I chose the Manchester and haven’t really “loved it” . Our cabinets were painted antique white and “distressed” for an old farmhouse feel... but I’m pretty over that style and want a more relaxed modern or transitional look. This year we installed peel and stick tile from Lowe’s in a “stained concrete” look. I hated our builder grade off white tile... but sad to say I probably hate this fake concrete even more. (Don’t tell my poor husband 😬😬). Anyway, the floor is dark and the counters are dark and I really like a clean crisp feel... nothing like what I have.

Our walls are SW Repose Gray. My dad and I have built some shaker style cabinet doors after I nearly fell out from the $17k quote I got from Home Depot. We are taking our time and they are coming along nicely. The bottom will be SW pavestone and tops will be SW Eider White.

My question is what can I do to give my kitchen a more updated crisp feel without having to get new counters or replace the floor just yet?

My bathroom tile floor is a mix of grey and blue. One bathroom (much smaller) has Urbane Bronze, this one has Distance. I like the bluer one better.

    That is gorgeous!!!

I am glad we were able to inspire you! Personally, I was looking at your inspo picture. The grey cabinets were broken up by the white countertops/backsplash and the wood floor.

But your grey is on the counter and floor already. You did not want white lowers because of kids and cleanup, which I agree with. Grey lowers I thought would be too much grey on the bottom. A color will break up the grey and be low maintenance.

Tell hubby this too: it may keep y'all from having to change the new counter and floor. (Personally, I like the counter and floor, just not with more grey.)Tell him you want to take your time and pick a classic color you won't get tired of, so that he is not constantly painting cabinets (see what I did there?).

Hope this helps! Have a great morning! 🌞

you can order swatches and/or sample cans online.

I'm pretty sure most paint stores can even look up colors. they're not literally matching to the swatch, tell them the brand and color name and they look up the color formula. call around and ask.

one of the reasons you can never get a perfect match is because each brand uses their own proprietary chemical makeup. always do test swatches at home. like I said, to an average person, the color might be close enough.

No worries about a dark blue looking too modern. It really comes off as pretty neutral, to my eyes, but still brings more life to the room. I think it would be beautiful.

Nothing "wrong" with gray, per se, but as others have said, you have an abundance of gray already. It does absolutely need to be the correct gray for your floor and counter - the pic of pavestone doesn't allow me to tell if it is or not.

I may be throwing a monkey wrench in the situation here because you're getting so much advice, but I looked at the pics of your laundry room with the gray cabinet color and I don't think it's bad at all. It's going to be awfully bottom heavy if you have dark counter tops, dark lowers and dark floors. IMO, you should keep the cabinets light to mid tone to avoid it feeling so bottom heavy. Maybe this will help. It was the only photo you posted with the updated floors and counter top.

I like the grey-blue sort of water color too.

Katinparadise, thank you!! You didn’t throw a wrench at all! I was hoping maybe someone had my same thought process haha!! I LOVE the navy a lot but I’m a pretty neutral girl and love a “sleek sophistication” if you will. I know navy can be really sophisticated too but I just am having a hard time picturing it with the floors. Im going to attach a couple of photos I just took of two blue colors I picked up samples of today. I don’t love either of them. I love them by themselves but not with the floor or the counter.

Nevermind the background everyone. There is a lot of construction going on in this kitchen right now! The runner rug I saw out at the store and LOVE It. If I can use it in the space that would be a plus. If not, that’s okay too.

Also! I’m off to get a new stove today! Going stainless and seeing how long I can last before replacing the fridge too.

I agree that the 2 blue samples aren't quite right - well, the one on the right is completely wrong, the one on the left is in the ballpark -do you see how it has the same tones (if that is the right word) as the floor and counter? - but a little too bright for my taste.

raee and katinparadise: I actually see both your points of view. The floor and counter are grey (a warm gray), my instinct was to break up the grey. I like the look of navy/teal lowers but had not considered darkness with the floor. Do y'all have more suggestions? Pros? Mrs. James, what are some of your favorite colors?

The only other color I could think of was wood, but I thought it would be too much extra work and expense to strip, sand, and stain doors. What about a brown paint? Am I too far out in left field?

Mrs James, I was hard pressed to find a kitchen with grey counter, cabinets, and floor, but I found these 2. Even they still had a white countertop. One is even using a colorful rug to break up the gray. Let us know how you feel about these (lowers).

Drblount10, I’m so sad, I just typed this whole long reply and it deleted the whole thing! I Love the second kitchen. It’s honestly nearly perfect! I love the gray and the colorful rug. The first picture the cabinets look kinda baby blue to me. It’s not bad it’s just not my favorite. My favorite colors are green (mint, sea foam, and emerald). I’ve seen some really amazing kitchens in those colors but I just don’t know about in my home. Like I said, 80’s ranch style in Alabama. I am hoping kitchen will be the first room towards having our home look cohesive and really look the way I would like for it to look for the time that we are here. I want to enjoy this season of our lives rather than saving our enjoyment for a later season (one that may not even exist!). So I hope y’all will all stay with me for the long haul... so we can do the family room next haha!! I am ordering some pulls by Lew’s Hardware to see if it is the look I’m going for. I’m pretty sold on brushed brass. I also am trying to reside between a Frigidaire Gallery range and a Cafe’ range. Any thoughts on those guys?

I am going to try to give blue another shot so I’ll be going tomorrow to pick up some more samples!

Attached are the same two blue colors but just at night with only the (horrible) overhead light on. Also we are dry fitting the cabinet doors so we are one step closer!!!

I completely get it. I’m also redoing my galley kitchen right now. Was the Lowe’s quote for the cabinets or the entire kitchen? I learned a valuable lesson and was able to price match and show the guy my ikea quote. I literally walked out of the store with 10k cabinets for 6k. Honestly, I kept waiting for a manager to come and tell the manager over the cabinets that he had lost his mind with the discounts he was giving me to meet their price.

If it were me, I’d spend zero and pay off those student loans. Get a spreadsheet and run the numbers. A $1000 spent today and the student loan interest accrued vs paying that loan off ASAP and then being able to invest and save for retirement comes to a ridiculous amount of money by time you compound the debt and/or investment returns by time you are 65.

I do like the navy on the right in your last post. Can you take a picture of the whole kitchen and then try different colors in the SW color visualizer? If you use the first picture in your post, that should give you a good idea.

My sister has the Frigidaire Gallery series of appliances in her kitchen and has been quite happy with it.

I’m not a pro, but I think the blues you are picking are the wrong tonal quality for that floor. You need a grayish blue, not a bright blue. That’s why I recommended Distance. There’s also a Smoky Blue in the SW line. I have a blue/grey/mottled tile in the bathroom I posted. I went bonkers trying to figure out which color but paining poster board samples made it clearer. Keep at it. I don’t think these blues are right.

Hi Mrs James. I just read your post picking greige kitchen #2 of the 2 pics I posted. This is the second time you have said you like a greige kitchen. Now I'm listening. So I say: Go for it, have as close to that dream greige kitchen in the photo as you can get!

A rug will help break up the grey floor, keep it and save $! I wish I had your countertop. Cleaning, hot pots, whatever, it is always going to look good!

Remove 1 greige laundry cabinet door and lean it in the kitchen on the floor, then take a pic. See if that color works in terms of maintenance for you.

Houzzers suggested white walls, white tile, clear glass light fixtures, and transitional hardware in brushed nickel or antique brass. If you look at both kitchens, this helps with the crisp clean feel. Finish your backsplash and regrout with white. Also see if you want the uppers greige or left white.

I am interested to see how this might look. What do you think?

Re: what’s wrong with gray. Nothing. Grey was the trendy house color for a few years. The current trendy kitchen color is blue. In a few years it will be another color. It’s pointless trying to chase trends unless you have endless money to burn. I would pick something neutral that you like (ex. Grey, white, or light colored wood) and stick with it until you move out.

I think those colors are not in the right family and too strong. You need more of a dusty, muted tone with your flooring

    Or a bit darker

Your current grey color is probably going to age better than blue because grey is a more neutral color. Ten years from now when some new color is trendy anything not neutral will look a lot more dated. Think of the pink & green from the 80’s or the hunter green & brown from the 90’s. Bothe look really dated now. But if someone had done their house light grey or beige or white or wood it would still look contemporary.

The Philipsburg blue is gorgeous and the right tonal quality. I think that whatever any of us do for today’s design will look outdated in 20 years, so go for what you like.

I would get a sample of the Philipsburg Blue too. It's beautiful

I love the Phillipsburg blue and its funny someone suggest that because most of the decor in the other front rooms of my house are dusty blue. I will take some photos and attach them. Sue54321, I feel like you have a REALLY good point about blue anything not neutral looking dated. I have come to the decision that I think I would rather go neutral and then change decor to update the look. So, I'm going to go with brushed brass 7" pulls on the top cabinets, 5" on the bottom, round knobs on the doors over the sink and stove, and t-knobs on all the drawer fronts. I managed to figure out how to install a hidden hinge on my doors but got the wrong overlay. I have what i (hope) is the correct one coming tomorrow so I will install and see! I am going to do the Eider white uppers and the Pavestone bottom and use the runner rug to bring in some color. I am hoping to figure out how to spray our delta faucet a brushed brass color because its touchless and I would hate to buy another. I purchased a Frigidaire Gallery range in stainless steal and purchased a piece of steal to put over the dishwasher until next month when I will be able to purchase a new one.... then a fridge month after that. My dad and I found a plan for a small (very small) island that I am thinking i will do a dark walnut butcher top (if that is possible) and maybe paint the bottom that Philipsburg blue. How does that sound everyone?

I'm proud I came up with a plan but I couldn't have done it without any of you! I'm also super proud of myself for figuring out how to do those hidden hinges haha! I can't wait to show you guys the finished product. I hope it turns out nice!

Oh, drblount10, may be a silly question but do I have to somehow break out the other grout before regrouting with white? I am looking at some glass fixtures. I will post the ones here I like for advice on which to get!

Your plans all sound great and manageable. Not sure if spray paining your faucet is necessary (or durable), but hopefully a pro can chime in. The blue on island sounds pretty, but 2 things: 1) do you really have room for one (or are you keeping it to the side and pulling out when in use?), 2) not sure if adding a 3rd color to your kitchen makes sense. Maybe just blue accessories.

Sounds like you have a plan Miranda.

You don't have to change the color of your faucet in order to have brushed brass hardware. It's perfectly okay to mix metals in a space and the faucet will relate to your stainless appliances.

I'm with @Gcubed in thinking you don't really have room for an island. Where would you put it?

A runner would be great to add in some color and pattern.

Look at Grout Renew to change the color of your grout without having to dig out the old and replace it.

I know you can gesso-and-spray paint hardware because I just did it. But I doubt a faucet would hold up to that. You can keep what you have.

I'm glad you have a plan Mrs. James! Test it out and use samples first to make sure. Your grey cabinets need to be a warm grey or greige. Ditto katinparadise, I have also heard of regrouting over old grout.
You might want to reconsider getting so many different hardware types in there.

If you are tight for space for the island, google “rolling kitchen island”. It’s basically a kitchen island on wheels you can also slide out of the way for parties or whatever.

The philipsburg is great, i love your new doors, the floor is great in photos and a good quick fix imo...good choices so far!

If you’re starting with new doors and drawer fronts, I would have you consider a simpler hardware plan. Knobs on doors and pulls on drawers. If you like pulls on doors too, make them all smaller (like your drawers).

I kinda of want to try the knobs on the doors but I’ve only ever had pulls so for some reason trying the new style makes me nervous. I’m honestly not sure why! Haha I’ll post a photo of the knobs I’m considering and y’all can help pick.

I’m also having trouble with a light fixture. I really love the seeded glass look and also the frosted white. Our house is kinda a almost farmhouse but more transitional style... maybe? I don’t even know anymore... nor do I feel like it’s super important... but I’d love for the fixtures in the house to have a flow... I want to replace the fixture in the foyer with a beaded flush mount (and it’s kinda non negotiable) and I currently have a steel look farmhouse mends this light in the formal dining area. So I want something that will flow into the kitchen. Photos attached below of my foyer and formal dining as well as the fixtures I’ve found that I like. I am open to any suggestions! Photos are a plus!!

The foyer actually has a little table with decor but I don’t have a recent pic and my toddler is napping on my chest right now so I won’t dare move !!

I like your choices for fixtures. Let’s hope a pro comes in and picks 2 or adds ideas. I have a similar one to the semi-flush mount Kira in my walk in closets. I love it. Put in LED bulbs recently so we never have to change them.

RedRyder... those two are the ones I love the most! I would do the semi mount where the fluorescent strip lights are and the pendant chandelier over the kitchen table!! Fingers crossed those are neutral enough to accommodate different styles cause I’m pretty obsessed with them!!

I like the Kira because I think the color relates to your dining room. I think it's a pretty choice. The others are a bit too formal for a kitchen.

I wouldn't spray paint your faucet. even if it's touchless, other things might bump into it (pots, pans) and chip it off, or it might come off after many cleanings. it's virtually impossible to get spray paint to remain chip free forever, even if you do the most perfect job of cleaning and priming it first. plus some faucets have a "spot resistant" coating, which I'm guessing could make it even harder for paint to adhere.

people seem to think that spray paint is = to the enamel on cars and appliances. it's not. there are major differences in both the materials and process.

also, FWIW: it's widely accepted that mixed metals in a kitchen and bath are ok, esp if given constraints. I'm sure it'll look fine!

Will your dad please adopt me?

Great work on the kitchen! The warm gray on the lowers is perfect! On the uppers, everything reads as white. The walls look to be a cool white. If the grout goes to white it will look clean and seamless. The design is well done, and the main issue is: do you like it?
