It could be the start of one of those “tree of heaven” things, or maybe a sumac. If I’m right, my vote is to toss it.

Many thanks. I am going to take your advice and get rid of it.

I also immediately thought of Ailanthus altissima (TOH).

But regardless of what it is, far too close to the house for any tree.

And even 'though you appear to have already yanked it, beware that it will regrow from the merest sniff of any part of root remaining in the ground.

You can tell by the stem that it is a suckering tree from a root. I would also say it's a Tree of Heaven. Is there a parent tree somewhere close by?

OPs plant is Ailanthus. It has the thumbs.

I don't see the thumbs. I'm blind! Could someone explain, please?

I think the "thumbs" are those little nodes on the edges of each leaf at the base of the leaf just above the leaf's stem.

They're rather inconspicuous. I guess that's one way of telling the Ailanthus apart from a Black Walnut are those thumbs since both trees have alternate, pinnately compound leaves.

Many thanks for everyone who replied to my question. I learned so much! Yeah, I think it was a tree of heaven. I did decide to toss it. I don’t have anything else on my property like that, but I do remember my hubby pulling out a similar “tree” last year from under our rose bushes. I imagine this year’s showing is from that. And I guess it will be back next year (sigh).

If it sprouts again, cut it off 1 inch from the ground and put stump killer on it. That will take care of it for good. I have experience with Tree of Heaven. I had three large ones in the back yard of the house I bought. Little sprouts had sprung up all over the back yard. It was getting quite dense, but a lot of elbow grease and a little stump killer did the trick.

Many thanks for the advice. This has showed up twice now from underneath and between my rose bushes. Do you know if the stump killer will affect surrounding plants?

It shouldn't as long as you only apply it to the cut stem and don't spray it.

Doesn’t it stink?

really putrid
