Is there a maximum clump size?

Some of my older daylily clumps are quite large but are still blooming well. Is there a size beyond which you do not let it grow? Ought I to be dividing at some point? It's a bit late to do that this year -- things got ahead of me -- but would dividing be a benefit, or not particularly necessary?

There's no maximum clump size. Some daylilies need to be divided frequently to bloom well. Others can go for years with no problem. They need to be divided when some of the fans fail to put up scapes or when scapes start having much lower bud counts.

I agree, I have some older varieties I have had for years and years and never divided. They still bloom well. I have a couple I have to divide regularly.
