Starting a new plant in water?

I have a geranium and want to see if it will root in water. My question is...how long does it take to see new roots (if I did it right) It is sitting in the west window but I move it in the hot afternoon sun so it doesn't burn. Also, I would like to know if I am suppose to change the water once in awhile? Thanks everyone.

I have better luck with taking a cutting and plant in those pods that you add water to until they swell then punch hole in the middle and put cutting in keep moist while rooting. you can dip cutting in rooting hormone if you wish before planting
