The water droplets are nice.

Sorry for all the confusion....... I was trying to show the dew drops all over the hosta. I went out to check for slugs and I thought, did it rain?? No, those little twinkles of light are the dew. Just thought it was cool.......the sideways pictures are because I had to use my phone because iPad does not have a flash option. So when I posted from the phone, the pics posted like this!

Steve, I did not know about this strange exuding of water at night....when I look again, it does look different from dew. It’s kinda on the edges at intervals. I will have to investigate this and report back.

I keep thanking everyone for their comments, but each time I return to this post, Houzz has unmarked them...... 😳

Interesting. I used to keep elephant ears in the house in winter until the water droplets the ears exuded stained the floor.

Ok everyone, after Steve’s comment, I did a google search to investigate this nightime phenomenon. It is called “guttation“. Apparently when a hosta has absorbed lots of water, it removes this excess water by shedding through the tiny droplets you see. So it is not dew as I originally thought which only occurs in the morning. Guttation is not unique to hostas however we can agree it is most beautiful on them. :-D

I looked up guttation on a website called “gardeningknowhow.com”

It gives a bit different explanation for this phenomenon that others which talk about root pressure. Not sure if one is correct or both.

So that is why I have to pee at night due to guttation. Go figure, I thought it was TB( tiny bladder)
