I don't fault the installer, he picked the safest install. Much easier to remove 2 corner sections than to notch midway along the sides of the backsplash. if the installer had done as you suggest, you would now be complaining that the vertical edges of the notch weren't even (because that has to be done freehand with a grinder, which is difficult to say the least) and that the width of the notch was too wide and now leaves a gap (because to install it your way the backsplash/notch needs enough clearance to slide in over the entire countertop depth). One needs to pick their battles and, IMO, the installer picked them appropriately.

I see what you mean, long term. That is a bummer. Not ruined, but not ideal.

However, the 2" backsplash for the entire vanity will look great and a fresh take on the otherwise expected 4" backsplash. So, short term will look fine, but yeah, if you ever want to change it out you'll have to change the countertop too.

@User thank you so much for the response. You suggesting that the 2" backsplash will be a fresh take really eases my mind a little more. I am just bummed about such beautiful material ruined with the notches. Sadly, there looks to be no solution except to continue on. I am excited to see what the 2" will look like now.

A favorite house blogger I follow on Instagram (Daniel Kanter) just installed a 2" backsplash in his kitchen and it is surprisingly great! You may just be on the front end of a new design wave. Happy accident.

The entire design is the culprit. Not the fabricators logical response to the design. Take it up with your bathroom designer. As you also will when the faucets go in, and you see that your sink is too big, and mirror frames and splash too obtrusive. The faucet will have issues operating now.

I wanted a 2" splash in my home but the fabricator was worried that the stone would break/crumble too much. Lucky accident for you! I was inspired by ...DeVol Kitchens

Once it is properly caulked you would not be able to tell which piece was notched. So that is a non issue. Installer applied the correct procedure IMO

Agree with some of posts that the overall design is a little weird...especially with the 3 big mirrors. Something just seems off.

Please post pics after the 2” splash is installed and all is grouted. It will look fine.

The toilet sitter risks falling into the tub - from this angle it doesn't look like there's much room there. Overall I think it is pretty with nice details but the three mirrors in a row give me the impression of ... it's hard to explain but i'll attach a photo. Almost like you're planning for several people to use the bathroom at once, each with his or her own mirror

I think once the backsplash is installed you will be less bothered and it will all cohere.

Ahhh.. relief. Looks so much better. They ended up cutting a new 4” and brought it with them today. You can’t really tell the notch exists.

Can you rethink those very large and obvious mirrors?

It looks a lot better now that it’s all installed. I kind of agree with ditching the mirrors though, if that’s a possibility. If possible, I think one big mirror across the whole area would look more cohesive.
