Have You Ever seen La Tourterelle?

One 1854 catalog describes it as a Gallica hybrid. Its perfect powder pick flowers 2" in diameter with button eyes certainly remind me of Gallicas. My pictures are not the best, but these will give you some idea of the rose. It's a cluster-blooming climber and very clean in a year when black spot has been a problem.

Lindsay, I have NEVER seen this rose...ever. And it is GORGEOUS! I do love those China-Gallica hybrids. Thank you! I noticed that you posted the very first entry on HMF. Where on earth did you get 'La Tourterelle'? Carol

Carol--My mother's friend gave me some cuttings. She brought it from Hickory Hill Plantation in Hanover when she moved after her husband and father-in-law died. I think it may have been brought to Hickory Hill by the first Mrs. Wickham, but I'm not sure about that. I'll have to ask a mutual friend; the friend who gave us this rose died about 10 years ago. We have another rose I cannot identify that also came from Hickory Hill where it was known only as The Noisette--it must be one of the early descendants of Parks' Yellow.
