I don't believe this is a tomato but doggone if I can figure out what it is. Hope somebody comes along soon with a better answer.

It's not a tomato but it's in the same family!! The angle is not great on the flowers but it looks like a Physalis, which goes by various common names depending on species. I believe this is Physalis peruviana, aka cape gooseberry.

Looks like a tomatilla to me.

Tomatillos ARE a type pf physalis! But the flowers look a bit different from the one shown in the photo.

You can tell these particular ones you have aren't tomato plants just by their leaves.

If you bought seed packets that said "tomato" on them then apparently the supplier had at least a percentage of misidentified seed in the packets. If instead you are saying you bought some tomato fruits at the store, saved and planted seeds from those then apparently not everything you bought was in fact a tomato.

Unless the tomatillo seeds got into the soil you planted the tomato seeds in on their own.

It's a ground cherry. The leaves aren't smooth and shiny enough for a tomatillo. If you don't know the species, I wouldn't eat the fruit.

I didn't bother to check which species the non tomatoes might be, have no horse in that race. Because that aspect was secondary to what I was talking about.

So are you saying the store sold it on purpose, with the tomatoes? If so, they'll probably be edible when the fruits fall off the plant. I was thinking it might be a stray wild seed. It's probably Aunt Molly's or something, if it was purposefully sold by the store.

Don't eat the husks. Don't eat fruits that haven't fallen off. They're toxic.
