I would try soaking them a couple of hours and then trying again.

Ken, fairly aggressive, not quite to the point of body slamming them on the driveway though, although the thought did occur to me. Lots of tugging and spraying them with the hose. I had read a couple of years ago about someone cutting off an inch or so on the bottom of the roots that were at the bottom of the pot.

I bumped up a post with a rootbound Razors Edge. ( what I hauled home) I used the tines of a Kincaid garden marker to wiggle the roots apart. Any sturdy piece of wire would work, maybe try a wire hanger.

cutting roots is a good way to introduce rot ... imo ... if your roots dont fit.. crikey.... get a bigger pot ...

bruce banyai.. told me to grab the top.. and beat it on a tree ... when i would get mad.. i would throw them around the yard while cussing.. not sure what that accomplished.. but i felt better.. lol ...

ken is always beating hostas up, and I USED to think he was joking. But then he nicely explained that Bruce Banyai recommended this because it stimulated the roots to grow or something on that order.
