Gorgeous plants, Amanda, a Clivia on the left? Lovely variegated Sans on the right. May I pls ask which Sans. as I'm a variegate fan?

Karen, yes, that's.a clivia on the left. (It got in the photo because it lives there next to the sans and they're a bit large to move into other parts my small urban space.) I believe the sans is Sayuri/Siam Silver/Manolin/Metallica - as I understand it these are all names for the same plant, but please correct me if I"m wrong. I believe it comes true from leaf cuttings.

I got it unlabeled at a local nursery a few years ago, and it has filled several large pots. Here's another one - a little beat-up after an experimental time outside in a very urban neighborhood. I had this beat-up plant in a north window for a while. It grew those two tall, thinner leaves with pronounced white margins and less center striping. I thought it might like more light and moved it to a south window. It's definitely perkier - the leaves were kind-of floppy before I moved it - but it seems to be losing its variegation on older growth (since I moved it). I'll wait and see what the new growth looks like before moving it again.

Small correction - rooted 'Metallica' leaf will sprout new leaves similar to species, i.e. more or less green. No fabulous silver sheen and variegation :(

Thanks both of you for the Sans name tho' so frustrating w/ all the multiple names for the same thing.

I've got from Stush, what he said was Siam Silver, super slow growing, but lots of white.

Thank you for the correction, Basia. That certainly makes sense in terms of how sans variegation works (as I understand it). Do you know what factors influence variegation in Metallica - light level, temperature, or...? I assume it's chimeric variegation and therefore will vary from leaf to leaf. But two pots of this plant, in the same location and growing conditions, had the same change at the same time, so I'm wondering what might have happened. The different-looking growth occurred over winter - very cold and dark here - but now, in warmer, brighter conditions, some variegation seems to be fading.

I believed my plant comes true from leaf cuttings because I gave some leaves to a friend and I remembered that the plants she grew from these were variegated. I found a picture she sent me and the emerging plants do look striped - but the photo is also quite out of focus :) So I think I'll try some leaf cuttings myself, not to prove anyone right or wrong but just because I'm curious.

Karen, those are beautiful stripes. What are some other variegates you like? When I had a yard (which I did when I joined the old GW), I grew several asarum species. They're some of my favorite plants. I knew you as pirate girl - also memorable. It's good to be back and talking with you here!

Hello Amanda. I do believe you loose the variegation on cuttings. I have one that grew out of the bottom of the pot and it is light green. Strange this new pup with a more solid light green grows different having more than 3 leaves to a node. Currently it has 5 leaves. You are correct on the many names and maybe a few more out there. I wonder if your cuttings will produce the same result?

Amanda, I don't know enough names of variegates to say which I like other than the ones already mentioned that I've seen or read about like Bantel's Sensation & Lillian True, both of which supposedly stay true (don't revert to green).

Stush, that is interesting about the all-green pup having more leaves. This plant continues to mystify me. I love it, though.

I didn't know Bantel's comes true from leaves. Now I'm really, really curious why. A different type of variegation? So much to learn...
