I’ve had a sickly looking Osmanthus fragrans for many, many years. I love the scent when it blooms. I’ve purchased additIonal ones but they haven’t even survived so I feel lucky to have this one.

I'm pondering that right now with a redbud that is just failing to thrive. Another one fifteen feet away is doing great. I have no idea what it wants to be happy. I was going to stick it out this year, but mentally I've already picked a replacement. It probably won't see the end of summer.

It depends how badly I wanted that particular plant. For most things I’m a ‘survival’ gardener. I plant and baby for a short while, and then you’re on your own. But if it’s something I really covet, I will baby a while longer. Trees and shrubs get more attention for a longer period, but perennials get sometimes just a few weeks. I work full time and have a large yard, so I can only afford a certain amount of time for the fussy ones.

That's funny! I ordered Annabelle from Bluestone Perennials and got these six-inch plants. They did nothing the following year....and nothing the next year, either--I mean, they got leaves, but they stayed really, really small--no flowers. The next year I was thinking of moving them--I was convinced they were in too much shade.....and then they just took off! I have since moved and brought some of their "children" with me and they are doing well. So, I get it if they are in a prominent spot, that it's hard to have patience. Mine were in a side yard.

I have enough space and am both lazy as well as having enough else going on that I generally turn a blind eye. I do have a couple of Hydrangea macrophylla that are getting shovel pruned this year if I can summon up the time and energy because they just don’t ever do well here. But they must be approaching 20 years old . . .
