indymom..I have several groundcovers..I removed winterceeper but the others are useful at the moment..I have English ivy, pachysandra, periwinkle, variegated bishop's weed, and lamium galeobdolon (to me the worst one)..we've had great days to work outside haven't we?..

wow looks so great!! I am having a similar struggle with English ivy and trying to remove it (as well as all the weeds that have grown in it) it's in our shady area that's slightly wooded. Did you remove my hand or use a tool? We used the weed whacker to scrape up the first layer of dirt and vegetation, it comes back but far less numerous.

Lamium bad? I grow the Purple Dragon variety. I guess the fact it does well in competition with my Maple trees means something, but it isn't out of control (yet). And isn't that what ground covers are supposed to do?

We had a lot of Liriope here and left untended it slowly outgrew its borders. Plus I just don't think it looks good. This year I removed the last of three big beds of it and planted (what else) Hosta. I heard that it was difficult to remove, but it didn't seem too bad. Just some physical labor getting most of the roots. I did move a bunch of it to control erosion on our hillside and it seems to be doing well there. The sunny bed got planted with daylillies last year. I've never tried a panorama shot here before, but here's the new bed. It's actually U shaped. Funny the small Hosta in front are larger than the giants in the back.

steve..I have yellow archangel..it's growing in every direction..of the groundcovers I have this one spreads the most..it's pretty when it blooms..I want to keep it but it grows faster than I wish it did..you can see it in this pic but it's hard to appreciate how much of it there is..

Wow!! Your yard does look amazing. Beautifully done. I must admit I did the same thing last year, that is dig out my black scallop adjuga. It had taken over everything! Like you I also decided to dig all of it out. OMG!! I was already having some shoulder issues, but all that digging and pulling out with my right arm wrecked my shoulder. Keep in mind I am almost 67. I am assuming you are much younger as you didn’t describe any Wailing or nashing of teeth. Haha! And just when you really think you got everything out, you start to see little pieces of it poke up in the garden, here and there. We are expecting some heavy rain and after that is a great time to get it out. My neighbor/assistant gardener will dig it out while I recuperate from hip replacement on the 10th. Don’t let your gardening wreck your body if you can help it.

Yellow Archangel is probably worse and it loves your area its planted in. Good luck with it. So far, I'm happy with mine. I planted some of that Ajuga two years ago. It suffered from Maple tree root drought, but it's back looking good this year. Hopefully it will remain tame. I kept expecting to see little Liriope pieces coming back, but I must have been sufficiently nervous about it that I did a good job removing the pieces. 10 years younger and my body is sore but its about the only exercise I great so I'm grateful for it. I'm running out of space for projects but I have a year to think about it.

steve..I bought one pot of yellow archangel at my neighbor's plant sale..then my parents built a deck and the family cleared the area..I took a couple more clumps so my area would fill in faster..mission accomplished Lol..I'll be more ruthless when I clip it back this year..I read an article yesterday that said not to plant it..it smothers natives..it's particularly bad in the Pacific Northwest..

Beautiful job. I’ve been digging and killing Archangel since March. Planted it in one area 25 years ago and now it’s everywhere. My advice and the extension centers I’ve read say it’s terribly invasive and don’t plant it. So glad it’s almost gone, but I’ll have to be diligent!

lindalana-yep, it will. I would love to have a woodland spot there-I just need to convince my husband we need that!!

nicholsworth-it sounds like some of those groundcovers would be very pretty! I could see where they would also help with the weeds!

Kali-I have used a shovel, trowel, and clippers. I would use a weed whacker but I have an allergy to so many plants and weeds I don't think benadryl would help!!

Great job! I really admire your work ethic. I actually planted some ground covers years ago, because why not? Then they took over their spot and everything else near them. I have been digging up lamium, wild violets and that horrible multi-colored leaf thing for years. They never go away. They should all come with a warning!
