Painting the Garden Red

My garden is so much redder than it used to be, mainly because of seedlings, new red ones, and bigger clumps of the older reds.


All American Chief was amazing today with ten blooms. (Maryl, this one is pretty sunfast!)



Fighting Fire is so very pretty. I wish the plant habit would shape up for me.



Forever Redeemed had its ffo yesterday.



My Heart Belongs to Daddy is still on short scapes of varying heights - I suspect grubs munched some roots more than others last fall.



Buddy's Red Head has never been bothered by thrips before, but this year they attacked the first few blooms with a vengeance. Bug spray must be working. There was a nice threesome yesterday. This cultivar is my best performing red, other than All American Chief.



Another look at Diver Down


Red Venom had its ffo yesterday. It has nice flowers but not as many buds as I would like.


Ruby Ridge is another new one I got last fall. It's on extremely short scapes, and the heavy dew has done a number on its sepals. But I can see on dryer mornings, that this one would be a stunner.



Seedling The Ultimate Sacrifice X Red Edition - One of the four scapes has 19 buds this year! But the others have only 8-10. I think the seedling bed has gotten too crowded. This one needs some wide open space for next year. (You can see we got a bit of that Cristobal rain this morning.)

      Kay would probably be responding but she is drooling too much!!! :) These are fabulous reds and all show such good color clarity this morning!! All American Chief was probably an eye stunner in that clump. Always love Fighting Fire and the new Diver Down is showing out. The seedling is of course gorgeous! Great red day!!

      Thanks for your comments, Kate. All American Chief was a super stunner. Cars are stopping to look at it. Dog walkers are stopping awestruck. LOL

      You do have some amazing reds, probably your photos are why I am wanting more reds. I have been in a purple mode the last couple of years. Thinking I need a few more yellows or whites in the front too. I really like the reds with edges my favorite just for the flower, but All American Chief probably does make jaws drop.

      Kate has me pegged. I simply love this post to the maximum, all those gorgeous reds! That eight inch seedling is showing out today. Buddy's Red Head is always a head turner. Fighting Fire , a beauty, and Forever Redeemed seems to always have stuner blooms. Not a bad one in the bunch, but Diver Down is magnificent. Love them all.

      kay - I knew you would like a post full of reds!


      Nancy - The reds with the white edges really do it for me. That's why I have so many of them. I don't intend to keep them all. I'll hybridize with them for a couple of years, and then keep the best performers.

      Love your reds! I think if I was to add another red it might be Buddys Redhead. Two more great seedling photos, it’s fun seeing your surprises.

      Sherry - Buddy's Red Head always performs well, and alway reblooms here. It is an evergreen. Seedling The Ultimate Sac. X Red Edition has one scape with 23 buds this time. I'm excited about that!

      Too much red , now that is a problem I am betting everyone here wishes they had , especially some of the ones shown here . I can't choose a favourite . Red is one of the bright colors I really enjoy

      What a beautiful group of reds. I still like Diver Down the best, but the others are close behind.

      Hoosier Nan - That white watermark on Diver Down does it for me, although I still like Fighting Fire a hair better and Buddy's Red Head because it's so tried and true.
