Can you also remove the stone or do you need to work with that?

If that is a wood burning fireplace you also need some sort of hearth - you can't put the hardwood over the plywood that close to the fireplace.

Fairly early in renovation and can do whatever I want but even vision anything that would look decent. We had a mantel on it and removed it. The side doorway just throws me off.

There are too many contrasting elements. You can work with the door if the rest of the wall has more cohesiveness like this one. This one has textural elements but it is all the same color. Remove the stone or paint it the same color as the wall, add some elements to the right to balance it out and make the fireplace appear to be more centered. You can do this look traditional as shown here or modern.

I would remove existing stone and then redo the whole wall in another stone or tile. New hearth to the end of the wall, no mantel needed.

Appreciate both your comments. I am replacing all the doors and trim on this floor. Also can lights can will be updated. I am going for a modern farmhouse look. What kind of tile would you recommend? This fireplace has haunted me for years. I just can’t vision.

Modern farmhouse is not my wheel house. :-) But here's an idea. wWhen I search modern farmhouse fireplaces on houzz, it's all over the map with ideas, some a lot more modern, some more traditional. This is a nice stone one that would go with darker floors. imagine this as your entire wall.

Before you do one more thing get some proper lighting . Make sure all the bulbs are LEDs in 4000K then at least the colors you choose will look the same at all times of the day. As for the FP I think we need to know a bit more about your style and also pics from further back to see how this relates to the room. Forget the whole modern farmhouse and just do what you like but IMO the whole wall done in some simple 12 x24 porcelain tile with the hearth the same will make this work better . I would not do a mantel at all then post the new pics and we can help with what else the wall needs
